Looking and sounding good! The joy you get when you finally sort a bike outweighs all the hassle- you can't get that same joy just by buying a stocker.

Here's a goofy video I made on Valentine's Day.

I need to pull the top end off and do my rings. It looks like they never seated correctly. I'm blowing oily smoke constantly.

I'm planning on changing the sprocket gearing too. The 19T/43T isn't working for me. I want more take off. Going uphill at 50mph 2nd is too high and 3rd is too low. I easily go 70mph on the freeway in third. Should the gearbox sprocket be an 18T?

If you can do 70 MPH in third, you definitely need to go down a tooth or two.

...if you want more guts in low/mid better change the camshafts.
If you have the torque that you want, it s easier to put a detachable 45 teeth rear sprocket

-can you tell me where s exactly that odd place where you parked?
Also your street looks very particular; like a private hood?

Thanks

That place of puddles is Port Costa, CA.

And I live at the end of a lane, so it's like living in a private compound.

I need to try to stop the gearbox from weeping out the shaft, so that will give me an excuse to try an 18 on the gearbox.

Time to tackle my holed piston. I'm tearing down for a complete motor rebuild and paint.

Got my new super cool timing light that told me I was at exactly 37.5 BTDC.

Ouch. I noticed my head gasket seemed to be blown around the center bolt. I'd always had trouble with the center bolt. I think it never would torque down right. So I did what I should have did in the first place and chased all the threads and bolts and now the center bolt screws in easily. Barrels aren't scored, just glazed.

This is supposed to be a fun hobby, but I don't like doing things over again and spending more money.

Have you diagnosed what caused this?(a combination of things or 1 factor?)

I have holed pistons in the past due to youth and all asshattery related to that.
But they wore signs of heavy knocking and extrem heat such as white crowns and melt at the ringlands.
But they where 2-stroke singles, i guess your twin kept running for awhile after the incident leaving black residue on the crown.
Your piston looks more like someone fired a gun at it

so the timing is spot on, could it be that the right hand pot was running way lean on the carb setting, but then wouldn't that burn the exhaust seat and also leave signs like a well blued pipe?.

I dig that's got to be a little soul destroying having spent so much time on a sweet build only to have to do it all over so soon, if anyone gives you that "what ever doesn't destroy you only makes you stronger" jive, personally I'd feel you're justified to kick 'em in the nuts,

Just watched the video. " I love it!!" How cool is that! People who aren't around Brit twins will never understand.

I will go through the carbs. But the running theory is super-lubricated pistons from non-seated rings creating a lean condition. That center head bolt/possible gasket leak is another smoking gun.

what did the plug look like in that hole? How long did you ride it while it was smoking and under powered?

Very white plug on that side. I was on the freeway going 70 going up a hill when I noticed power going out, checked my fuel lines first, then kaput. About 20 seconds from the ting ting sound to no power.
