For removal while the bars are still on the bike, loosely place channellocks around the handlebars...tap the pliers with a small hammer (pushes the grip outbound) and the grip should slide off. If the handlebars are off the bike, just hold the grip end in boiling water for a short time...slides off nice.

this may be real basic but is there a good way to remove grips (clutch side) without wrecking them? I need to widen a set of bars but want to save the grips...thanks

 

I'm assuming you are talking about rubber grips.

Compressed air.

1. Plug the end of the grip you want to remove with a couple loose wraps of duct tape if it's got a hole in it. Also run a quick piece around any weep holes in the bars.

2. Take off throttle side grip/throttle tube.

3. Close your hand around the air nozzle in the open end of the bars and blast it with a compressor. It may take a few seconds, but if you can hold it even semi sealed it'll make a cool [pop!] noise and shoot across the garage. (You can even have a friend kind of help it off a little, but it's more fun to shoot it at your dog who will be sitting there giving you the WTF? look anyway.)

Doesn't damage a thing.

Thats the way I have been doing it for years !!!! Also works putting them on

 

I've read that if you can get a screwdriver or icepick under them and put some Wd-40 or like in there they will come off with a little twisting.To glue them on I like to use hair spray,you know the kind old Aunt Mildred uses.holds them on good.Hope this helps.

I would think so. You'll probably get better distance out of the grip and a louder report too. Whatever gives it a better seal. Make sure to plug weep/drain holes if you got 'em.

Even eaiser way, don't plug anything just put the air nozzel between your grip and the bar and spray, it will create an air gap between the two. As you do that pull it off.

Try this, I usually slide a flat screw driver between the grip and the bars, and shoot some armor all or degreaser in the grip, then spin it with your hand and it should break lose very easy, you don't need much, make sure to clean it out good before you put it back on or it will just slip off... always works for me.

I use a thin screwdriver & then pull it up a little, And take the little tube that comes with the carb spray and squit a little in there, They slip right off, I also put em on with Carb Spray, then slip em on ,But leave it alone a few min. it just seems to stick. Well that's how I've been doing it for the last 35 years, Never had a problem. Rubber grips that is. Don't like them new fancy metal ones, Ya know why bother. ?
