Classic springer with wishbone mod?

I really need help on this subject.

I think the classic springer front legs on the classic springer fork is ugly as hell. I've noticed there is a lot of people modifying the DNA springer with the wishbone front. Have anyone heard or done this mod on a classic springer?

I have a wishbone frame on my 61 pan, and think it would look sexy as hell with a wishbone kinda looking front legs on the springer.

Classic one:

Thanks guys! Sorry if the bad english makes you confused. what i mean is, i have a classic springer which i like, BUT i dont like the front legs on it. I would rather mod my existing classic with the wishbone front legs. the fork is divided into 2 pieces, i want to mod the front one, also called front legs i believe.

My question is. Can the dna mods be used on the classic fork?

Your English is fine. Your choice to cut up a springer is not. :)

What I think most folks are thinking is that this would be a terrible sacrilege. Instead of cutting up or modifying an original springer (which is no longer being made, and guys are killing themselves to get), cut up a crappy Chinese DNA like everyone else does. Set the original on a shelf, or sell it to someone, or something, but don't hack it all up. Let it back into the world of restoration and AMCA guys, and cut up something that's not very special.

No one really is going to have done what you are describing because most guys would kill for an OEM springer, and the guys who have them are not chopping them up to put some bunk-ass DNA beauty kit on them.

Still, this is choppers... I guess you can do whatever you want; it's your springer. I suppose you could build your own front legs and not permanently alter the springer you have, but it seems that it would just be easier to buy a DNA and modify it appropriately.

chriscalvera,
I don't know of anyone who has done the exact mod that you are suggesting (swapping a DNA custom front (spring) fork with the stock Harley type), but there have been lot's of Harley springers with modified front spring forks over the years. For a while, twisted front legs were considered stylish or hip (by some people, the stylish and hip I guess :)) especially on extended chopper front ends. A few things you need to consider: front spring fork length and width, the length and diameter of the spring rods, length and diameter of front fork rocker studs. In other words, I don't think it would be a simple bolt-up swap.In the long run,you might be better off building a custom "wishbone" front fork designed to match the stock dimensions and utilize the stock spring rods and spring package and the stock rocker studs.

you can make a new front leg up with what you want to do
just need some round tubing and a tube bender and some spring rods and ball cups etc.
If you have an already cut up front leg upper section it can be done for sure pretty neatly,

If your interested in maybe having a custom one built drop me a pm on here I might have some time to get one done for you, if I don't I can at least point you in the right direction of someone that can does have time and can do it.

I know for a fact I can do Im just slammed with bike work right now so my turn around time is a bit slower than normal,

If your looking for an off the shelf one I don't know of anyone that makes anything like that

Thanks man, i will look into it.

Can you please specify what you mean with "cut up front leg upper section" I haven't cut anything, i thought it was allready 2 pieces if you took it apart?

Just get that cool DNA springer and a 300 tire and extended forward controls and a cool handshifter with clutchlever on it and Skulls. Don't forget Skulls.

Just saw your bike. Now I really do not know what to say. Did you buy it this way?

Chris when building a bike every part has to harmonize with the others on the bike. Those awful looking springer front legs that you like so much do not go with any other part of your bike.
Now if you want to totally strip down the bike and have a front end that goes with your wishbone frame have Nicke in Stockholm (rigidhips blog) narrow your springer and have him build you a custom wishbone front leg assembly.
Then you get a narrow tank rear fender etc.
And you say you never cut anything? My best advice is to go to community colleges or trade schools and enroll in classes about basic metal working. It will open your eyes towards what is possible and what is possible only with a lot, lot, lot of work.

Everyone is assuming that he wants to cut up an original springer. Funny, I don't see that stated in any of his posts. I think his idea is to mate a DNA style front leg to his OEM rear legs. Building a new front leg, with the wishbone shape, that he is looking for, would be fairly simple. No OEM parts need to be butchered and, if it looks like crap, no harm no foul. I personally wouldn't do it. Some things are perfect right out of the box. The HD springer is one of them, at least to my eyes.

Why would you replace the purposefully designed OEM, front legs with that kind of bling. Besides, I've never understood the reasoning behind a design that puts a bend in a member under compression. Just to give it a reason to fail? Members under compression should be straight, as they are in the original.

Thanks guys! - I guess you are all right, maybe it's just me. I just had this idea that it would be cool if the front legs matched the frame of the bike.

I'm just gonna keep it as is. and build on the other stuff on the bike. I'll upload some more pictures of the rebuild when we get closer to winter.

Thanks again!
