first off the engine number does not match the VIN. the last 7 digits of the VIN should match the frame and engine.

the engine cases are off of a Bonneville

T120RPE03078 - Nov 1970 Bonneville 4 Speed 650cc
TR6SRDU28455 - 1966 Tiger 4 Speed 650cc

What likely happened is that this bike sat in a dealer unsold for a while and was finally sold and registered in 1971.

My 1971 Parts Book lists both Bonnevilles and Tigers as OIF's. what you are refering to is the 5-speed option on tigers did not come out until 1972.

The engine *IS* a '71 ... built in November of 1970 means it was built for the '71 model year. Triumph's model year began in August.

The frame is a '66.

You can't ever go wrong for $500 with a full lump motor and a frame and a bunch of other junk.

That title goes to the frame, which as Bones BIR said is a '66. The motor obviously was swapped in there some time down the road, and as to the title saying '71 that could have happened anywhere down the line of owners. I would conservatively say that half the old british bikes I have ever owned have had the wrong year on the title though the VIN etc is correct.

Good score, you should be able to get that thing together without too much difficulty!

There was some weird tab sticking out the front, it looks like it needed to be gone. What the heck was it ever for? The reshape looks fine. You know you probably want those head steady mounts, but it looks like you're keeping them anyway. I got scared the first time I looked at that photo, too.

And seriously, go with whatever's on the title when it comes to DMV. The less they know the better. Very few people know what they are seeing when it comes to these machines, and none of them work for the DMV. But between us, start calling it a 66, cause it looks more like one than an OIF anyday. Either way you're legal without turn signals!

somewhere in there i worked on one of my rear motor mounts... gonna need some pegs before i can do much more to it
