Socialism at work...

Think about how many factories are shut down here and get ready for more of the same.
what? the company was never fiscally solvent, they were in the red from day 1. had nothing to do with the bogyman "socialism" and everything to do with not making money. furthermore, just because they were a cooperative doesn't make them a socialist company. in fact, worker's cooperatives are democratically run and autonomous from the state.

The sad part of the Triumph story is that its "downfall" yesterday is what makes it endearing today - its adherence to tried true design. They never truly redesigned their motorcycle. And try as they might not to admit it - people flock to new, fresh faces. And Triumph didn't have it. Couple that with a reluctance to correct its errors and BAM!!!! downfall. Today, the Bonnie line is successful BECAUSE it grasps that tried true design, but has updated to make it reliable AND appealing. The fact is old Triumph got cocky in its early success.

Politics really had nothing to do with it.

Dragon, That video is most informative. Thanks.
but they did not even touch upon the taurettes syndrome malady.
that would have been the shits.
I wonder if Attention Deficit Syndrome played a part in the downfall??

It's true that shop classes in school aren't all that they could be in a lot of cases, but parents have to shoulder some of the blame. My kids have been bouncing around the shop since they were old enough to walk. Ya a lot of the time it was a huge pain in the ass answering 3 yr olds endless questions but now that they are teenagers they are pretty handy. We have some good times working together.

There have been books written on the fall of the British motorcycle industry. And many articles in the British vintage mags. Most of them boil down to the same thing. The inability or unwillingness of the "captains" of the motorcycle industry to invest in new tooling or new models. The Triumph twin was designed in 1935 and didn't change except for minor changes right up to the 60s. I have little experience with Triumphs (other than a Triton in the late 60s). But to give you an idea of how little things changed. I had a 1949 500T Norton motor. Basically an ES2 but with an alloy barrel and head. I used a timing cover from a 1960 Model 50 350 and it bolted straight on. I used it because it had a three bolt pattern for a distributor. But I used a BTH magneto from a 1939 Velocette. Again bolted straight on. I then used engine plates from a 1961 ES2 and bolted the whole lot into a 1960 featherbed. Whats the point? I used parts from a 22 year period and they all fit together. Nothing changed! Thats what happened to Triumph. The Japs landed in England with exciting new bikes and the english response was to ignore them and continue to produce 30 year old designs. Never mind socialism and all the other isms being thrown around this thread. If there has to be an ism to describe the failure it would be headstuckinthessandism. And that includes the co-op.
