forgot to say its a 1975 fl trans. ratchet top

Ok, i had the transmission rebuilt last fall, new main shaft, shifter dogs, some gears replaced not all. Long story short i got it put back in a couple amonths ago and was getting ready to fire the bike for the first time after the rebuild. So here is the chain of events. put the enclosed belt drive on. Turned motor over... seemed really tight(when in gear...with no rear chain on). pushed clutch in turns really easy as it should. put the rear chain on and couldnt even trun it. made shure its in neutral, hard as hell to shift. actually almost impossible to shift. Once i got it in what seemed neutral i tried turning the motor over from the crank with a rachet. about a quarter turn. click back in gear. Had my girl come out and hold the clutch in, still cant turn the rear wheel. took the rear chain off...wheel spins fine, turn the motor, still hard pretty hard...push the clutch in spins just fine. Check clearance issuse. none can be seen. So im sure its stuck in gear as i can't get it to shift at all now. cant turn the rear wheel by hand( will turn if i turn it at the crank with a rachet....STILL VERY HARD) Will not kick for anything. i mean anything.... i am at a lost hear for what could be going on. any help would be appreciated. sorry for the confussing post lol

Sounds like rachet lid isnt setup properly, possibly caught in 2 gears. Im guessing the trans shifted ok after rebuild, on bench, before lid was installed??? How did the lid drum look?Check to see if bushings from top of shift forks-both-will slide all the way around drum maze. The drum could also be squeezed in some area causing the bind and jamming you between two gears.

yes actually it did shift fine a couple of times then all of a sudden this happens. but that was in the bike. as for before it was installed i don't know i didn't rebuild it had a shop do it.

I'm no expert but a friend with a belt drive on a BSA had a similar problem. Very tough to shift and turn over. It turned out his belt was too short and therefore too tight and it was causing a binding in the trans. As soon as he got a slightly looser belt all became good again.
