All Harley 9 Spoke Mags Created Equal?

Hey guys, just wondering if all of the old 9 spoke mags are interchangeable. Reason I ask is that my brother scored me some NOS XR-1000 mags, the ones with the Orange stripe around the outside. They made the XR mags in '83 and '84, and I'm thinking they'll end up on my '82 shovel FXR. Both bikes run a 16 in the rear and a dual disc 19 up front. Any reason they wouldn't be a direct bolt on? Thanks!

Dont quote me, but I think they are interchangeable as long as they are flipped around for the rear. Rotor and sproket wise, is what Im getting at. I think its the fastener size...or?

You probably got all that though already.

I don't know whether all 9 spokes of the same size are the same (i.e. all 16s, all 19s, etc). But I do know the front and rears are not the same (FL 16's excluded), so you can't slap an 18" rear wheel in front w/o changing something. Furthermore, the hub casting wasn't just a solid chunk as I'd hoped, which I know b/c I was having an 18" machined to fit a narrowglide. But there wasn't enough meat left to reliably carry the bearings (at least in my opinion).

Thanks for the feedback guys. So far I haven't heard anyone say that I can't replace my original FXR 19" dual disc front mag with an XR1000 ironhead 19" dual disc front mag, or replace the rear original FXR 16" mag with an XR1000 ironhead rear 16" mag. My brother already shipped the mags my way, just wondering if there's anything else I'll need to swap mags when they show up. Bearings are all the same? Thanks again!

i recently made new hub adapters to fit a set of morris mags with disc brakes. doing so i measured about 5 different wheels and hubs early and late and found that for the most part they all had the same offset. the bearings will be the same so long the axle diameters are the same

Chris,

I'm thinking they'll be a bolt-up swap, though I'm not all that familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the XR1000. The '83 XR1000 used the 11½" front rotors and calipers that showed up in '84 on all the other HD narrow glides, but I'm thinking the width, bolt pattern and thread size are the same. Your FXR has the dual disc setup with the 10" rotors that was introduced on the '77 XLCR and used on the rest of the HD narrow glides from the following year through '83.

On the rear, Harley used that 18" 9 spoke cast wheel on the '78 XLCR (the '77 was a 7 spoke Morris) and the early '79 XLH with an offset cast in, making the brake side stick out farther. I'd imagine they continued with the offset on the 16" 9 spoke cast rears they used late '79 through '81, because the brake stayed the same. But I think they went back to a "standard" width with the brake redesign for '82 so they could use the same hubs on all the laced wheels on the other families (4 speeds, FXR, Softail, and eventually Dyna.) and not have to make special laced wheel hubs and cast wheels just for the Sportster.

Those XLCR wheels might be late enough that they were made in Japan, rather than being cast by AMF (American Machine and Foundry,) and be certified for Tubeless tires. If so, the word "tubeless" will be embossed as part of the casting.

Just for reference, here's a pic of a dual flange hub with the offset for '79-'81 XL. The 18" cast wheel had the same offset. Pretty sure the 16" for those years did too.

Big Oscar, did you polish that yourself? I polished a set of Sportster mags for my shovel years ago and it was one of the most tedious, boring jobs ever. And once I'd started I obviously had to finish the job, although they do look great when done.

I'm reminded that there was a shop, I think it might have been Randy Smith's Custom Cycle Engineering, that offered the service of machining the outer end of the spoke down so the rim was smoother. Like in the pic of the 13 spoke wheel at the bottom of this post. I asked them about doing an 18" for me, but they told me at the time they were only set up to do 16"s and 19"s.

The early 77 XLCR has a 7 spoke 18" Morris rear wheel. This wheel has removable bearing carriers so it can be adapted to any sprocket/brake disk offset and any size axle bearings. Late 77 and all 78 XLCRs have 9 spoke wheels. There is also a very rare rear drum brake 18" rear wheel that was only fitted to a limited production 75th anniversary XLH in 1978.

The Morris XLCR aluminum wheels are lighter than the 9 spoke wheels but not as light as the magnesium Morris racing wheels.

I have an extra XLCR rear wheel if anyone is interested.

that's what I ended up making for my set. I also had to plug the 8 existing holes that were in the wheels for the drum carrier and drill the 5 new ones. I used double row bearings from the newer styled wheels

rear. there was a heavy difference in offset on the two sides but after a lot of measuring on a couple later hubs and the Morris wheel, I figured out how thick each side needed to be

the front was easier because the offsets were the same for both sides

I hope that nobody had an aneurysm due to the late model motorcycle.

Whoa! Lots of awesome feedback and craftsmanship on here since I first posted this! MUCH appreciated! My NOS XR-1000 mags showed up, they're perfect! Gotta order bearings and seals for them and then mount up the new tires that just showed up. Sorry for the small square pic, I just stole it from my Instagram account.
