So the forks slide freely on the selector fork shaft, but the shaft won't pull out of the case?

The layshaft should slide out and then you can get all those gears outta the way. Just keep them in order. Once the box is cleared out you could try heating up the end of the selector fork shaft thats in the case. It should just slide out easy.

I think you should get it out. It probably would be best to get everything apart to make sure that it's all OK. I went and got the 1 11/16" socket. Since I don't have a 3/4" drive. I ground to flat spots on the socket and borrowed a buddies big ol' crescent wrench (he didin't have a 3/4" drive either). Worked just fine for removal and too re install.

Side note for you. Make sure the socket you get is deep enough to go over the threaded part of the main shaft high gear. This all being said knowing there is a box spanner out there made specifically made for this task.

Yeah, I saw the specific tool in Wes' vidoe but the wait time on the order and the cost has been keeping me from buying it. I got the cases split and have been fighting the sludge trap but headin to the auto store today for that socket...
