Did a bunch of rims yesterday and I was able to take some pics... Most of the time I dont take the time to snap pics... For any of you that are doing it, there is alot to it.. But the most important thing is where you start, and what way the spoke face is pointing.. If you get the first spoke right, its easy.. If you dont.. Plan on doing it 3 more times.. It should never be hard to get the nipples to thread on. If it is, stop and start over.. These are a couple basic Triumph 19" front and a 16" rear lacing procedures...

When you are doing the rear, when you get to the right side, you will have to press down to make the hub protrude the 1/8 past the edge of the rim that you need...while tightening the nipples evenly all the way around... So keep the hub suspended in the air, while the rim lays flat on some 2x4's..
Truing, and tourquing should be done by an experienced tech, but if you get your own rim laced, it will give you a good sense of pride, and what building a motorcycle is all about...

Stock 40 spoke HD rim, yes... Thanks Bozi.. Customer wanted the hot rod style.. seems to be very popular these days.. Nice fat Avon whitewalls too... I have seen them done a few different ways.. I am not saying my way is right either.. I just know they always true up good, dont have any spoke coming through the nipple.. And the offset is right.. Now the manual you speak of.. Yes thats true, but... That is an 18" rim, and in the Routts 16" spoke sets that come with the rims, it shows the way I do it.. So I figured that was the right way.. Like I said, if you have it wrong you will know it very soon, as the nipple will not reach the spoke, or it sticks thru the hole too far.. To each his own...

The Triumph hub in the Harley 16" wheel is common enough that if you type "Triumph", "Harley", and "spokes" into ebay you'll find nice stainless spokes that are meant for that exact same set up. I'm about to lace one up myself so thanks for the pics!

Thanks very much for this informative post. Big help indeed, It's been a day or two since my last rim rebuild and I've got the exact thing on the go right now, a drop centre HD rim and a '67 Triumph spool hub. I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers from Canada, -Bill

Since you are on the topic of Triumph Wheels, here is a Conical Hub. Everything previously stated applies. line up the holes on the rim and it will all fall into place. Plus the Front Conical drum is done the same as the back.

What size avon is it? I run a 5.00x16 which will give about 3/8" to 1/2" of clearance from chain to tire.. which is more than enough.. I have seen alot of them hitting the tire on some of the junk that comes thru the door..

Great pics and write up-
One thing I learned from my 1st rim lacing experience-
Was to double triple check your replacement spokes. If you have set with inners and outers...separate them right away...it can be very hard to tell the difference of the two...without comparing side by side-
If you happen to have inners, outers, and frontward facing and rearward facing spokes...separate them out as well-
As stated by the OP...its the 1st one thats the trickiest and most important...

***I really like those straight style spokes that went into the rear wheel with a drum on it***
