Triumph Magneto Install question

2277 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  asillymick
I have a friend that just got his magneto back from having some repairs done, and now it is time to install it. Only problem is that it was sent for repair about a year ago and he doesn't know how to re-install it. I figured I would see what tips you guys would have so I could pass them on to him to get his ride going again. I know a little about a points and electronic kits but I was sure if this was also pretty straight forward or if there is tricks to it. Thanks

A little info would be helpful here.

What Triumph? Unit or pre unit? Lucas magneto? Hunt? ARD?
650 Unit with a Lucas he thinks. I will let you know when he gets back with me.
magneto on a 650? is magneto same thing as stator and rotor?

A magneto is not the same as an alternator.
The alternator is there to provide juice to run the system and charge the battery if necessary.
A magneto is a self-contained ignition unit, providing it's own power and spark.

Never seen a Lucas magneto on a Unit 650. I suppose it could be done with an 80's electric start version with the starter removed!

OK, his bike is a 67 650 and it is a Lucas Magneto. Not sure why he spent the money he did to have this thing fixed but he did. So any help as to what we need to do, to be sure this thing works I would be very thankful.

Wow, get a picture of it, never seen a Lucas Magneto on a unit engine.
How the HELL did they do that?
Wondering the same thing E'man. Maybe it's a '57?
