Was curious what people are using to seal engine cases (with success). I work at a Detroit Diesel/Allison dealer and have access (free) to a fair cross section of Permatex sealants. I'm guessing Ultra Grey is not an equivalent to 3 Bond. Was thinking about anaerobic gear case sealant. Will order and wait for 3 Bond if the consensus says it is the only safe bet though. Thanks for any input.

I like Loctite 518. It is anaerobic.

yamma bond 4 when you only want to fix it once

the gray is very good but its not yb 4

Doing it once is my plan. I was thinking Loctite 518 because we use it at work to seal gear train cases on 14 liter diesels,i know it stands up to the vibration and heat, but never used it on aluminium. Was thinking Ultra Grey/3 bond/yama bond might fill in irregularities in the machined faces though

The only gaskets I use on Triumphs is the head gasket and on T140's an inner tranny gasket....I have used Loctite 518, Yamabond, Hylomar M and even carefully applied black Permatex RTV with no leaks for many years...Important thing is surgically clean case joints and following the sealant manufacturer application directions...Use the minimum to get the job done and I let all sealers cure overnight no matter what ...

Thanks for the input guys...seems like Yamabond4 is the way to go. Boiling the cases now....hopefully going back together by next weekend (waiting on a couple bearings)

Most people used to ThreeBond/Hondabond/Yamabond (which is great stuff) haven't necessarily used modern industrial sealants. I'm comfortable using either. 518 works very well and is more hassle to separate than ThreeBond. I don't use 518 on inspection covers.


Either will do the job. ThreeBond is grey so there's a cosmetic advantage.
