I picked up a raw tank from a buddy. He (who works at a "custom" bike shop:)) says I should nickel plate the tank rather than having it "treated" at a radiator shop. Nickel plating is obviously more expensive, but he says they've had a lot of problems with tanks done by radiator shops. Soooo, now please, lets hear from experience.

I've used radiator shops to line every single non-stock tank I've ever run and never had any problems.

What did he say would happen if you use a radiator shop to get it coated?
He said they would get them back with residue in the tanks. They swithched radiator shops but still would run into trouble with it. Not every time, but consistent problems.

I've had problems with SOME radiator shops but have since learned that the best remedy for corroded tanks is to fill it with cocacola syrup and the acid in the soda will eat away all the rust and crud. Of course, you need to clean the hell out of the tank when your done and it takes a good week to let it sit. I've heard the same thing with Molassis and water but have never tried it.

Is the tank rusty inside? If it is, I've used the molassas and water trick and it works. It gets rid of the gas fumes so you can solder or braze a hole too. If it isn't rusty, I would not coat it. New tanks aren't coated and I'm wondering what the new additives will do to the coating.. I've used Red-Cote with good results. I've also heard Por-15 works. There's a thread either here or on JJ for contact info. Just an opinion.

there's this too:
http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htm

-works on rusted tanks well
I used this stuff on a painted sporty tank because the bottom started to seperate from the sides and would literally spray gas out the bottom. I coated it once and didn't work so then I dumped a bunch into the corner that was seperating and cured the problem. Haven't had any leaks since but now I have a half inch of sealer in the corner of my tank.....
