Sorry ahead of time for the sorta'-long post.

I'm in the process of getting my Triumph titled and registered. I have a dilemma to discuss with you folks... Here's the dilemma...

I went through ITS to get the paper trail started and got back the papers I need to walk into the Nevada DMV, get registered and apply for a title. Part of the process will be that I need an inspection. Because of it's age I will not need turn signals, however I will need a bunch of other garbage I don't want on the bike. I could borrow all this temperarily from any of my buddys and walk out no problem... but here is the REAL problem... I don't have frame numbers anymore!! They will probably restamp a new, different set of numbers on the frame (from what I've been told). OR there will be a shit storm and I may not be able to get a title at all. Non-matching numbers would suck because I probably won't be able to register it as a 1960 Triumph anymore and I would carry that "special construction" title around instead. With this being said, the numbers are clean and free in the system, and I have a great professional number punch set...

Should the numbers be re-applied, get the VIN inspection and just apply for the title first (to be safe) or should I just walk in with what I got (after getting insurance and borrowing a front fender, horn, mirrors, etc.) and see what happens? What do you guys think? FEEDBACK PLEASE!!! THANKS!!

Personally I'd just restamp it. Just be careful where you restamp it. Research where they were stamped in '60 (I believe left downtube, top at about the 10 o'clcok position). Hopefully there is no sign of distress in that area, as it could lead them to suspect grinded numbers. I think also one key point - don't make the numbers look too perfect, age shallows indentations, and remember they were originally done on an assembly line by hand.

Just my two cents worth.

if you piece a bike together having a title that matches the frame and/or motor numbers you are in pretty good shape. if not they assign a VIN, if they "assign a VIN" it will be as a special construction and not a '60 trump...usually when they assign a VIN, it is a metal decal not numbers being re-punched. if you want it to be titled as a triumph you really need to have all of your ducks in a row like a previous title, or at least frame/motor nubers and some history (bills of sale etc.) so it can be researched as a lost title or something along those lines...if you dont have that stuff, just go at them for a special construction title. remeber, the resale on SC titled bikes isnt close to as good as the real thing. but if you are going to keep it and ride it who cares just get it on the road.

When I registered the 65 triumph, I had used an early Santee frame, had Santee paperwork for it, the # matching origonal frame with me and still had to register as special comstruction (metal Tag). A word of caution, The people at DMV Inspection stations are experts in Vin's. That's what they do all day long, one little slip up on your part and they Will Take your project. You will, over time be able to get most of it back, but why put your self in that position.

I thought you had a stock frame, just without numbers. If you're using an aftermarket frame, don't restamp the numbers. VIN dudes can tell if it was a stock frame just altered or an aftermarket frame applied.

I don't know what frame he had either, but I ran a shop in Van Nuys in the 70's and even then the DMV guys were sharp. At the first sign of anything odd they would use an acid etching kit that would show if the area in question was virgin and unaltered or if it had been ground/welded/machined or in any way altered. (make one number look like another, ect). They had a squad that came out to the shops and did spot checks also, and I was amazed at how much these guys knew. They even knew what type style matched what bike, all the number/letter combs there were for what years and modles, how deep the numbers should be, some mfg's twist a certin number slightly, and on and on. Also playing around with numbers is a Federal Rap so keep that in mind.

i registered my 70 triumph using ITS and never had a safety inspection done. the only inspection you need is the vin inspection, and that can be done by a cop, parole officer or anyone with a badge. this being said, just stamp the numbers back in yourself and be done with it.

Okay, I just sat on the phone on hold forever with NV DMV and got a little more info once I got through.I will for sure have to have a VIN inspection and it has to be done by them. I asked the lady what I would do since I only have motor numbers (I told her I thought it was registered off the motor numbers in Alabama where I have registration from :)). She said she thought they would go ahead and put new numbers on the frame and it could still be registered as a 1960 Triumph. I'm not too concerned about the resale (with matching numbers) because it's far from being a restored bike, but I know some insurance companies aren't big on the Special Build classifications, so that would be good to stear clear of. It really doesn't sound like it's going to be a big deal. I'm just going to take it down with what I've got and explain that's all I have and see where it goes. I'm going to go without all the extra "safety items" and just tell them I'm going to apply for title, not registration. A guy at work said when he went for an inspection with his Norton they didn't even notice that half the bike wasn't there. They just checked out the numbers. Anyway, I can't afford to get it taken away after all this and I can't afford a Federal rap either... especially considering I'm pending a security clearance for my job. I'm going to play it safe on this one...
