I really thought about putting one of these things together back in the early 80's. The ad in the HN catalog had a phone number you could call and listen to a promo tape that had the engine running on it. I did that and eventually talked to the guy on the phone who said that one of the beautys of this mil was that it basically had unlimited RPM's...so you could wind all the power you wanted out of it. hmmmmmmmm

looking back, I'm glad I never went any farther than that with it.

back when the super vee was made nostalgia cycle and whatever that magazine was (maybe supercycle? please corect me if wrong) had "delusions of grandeur". thought they were going to put HD out of business. they were able to make a complete fake harley. all they were missing was a motor. in the mag they spent all thier time bad mouthing harley (like today when people complain Harley doesnt build thier bikes just for "them") saying harley had lost touch with the american biker and in the magazine would have huge spreads with drawings of huge supervee factories manned by cartoon bikers with every cliche' you could think of to attract the wannabes, from engineer boots and tattoos to long greasy hair ( reminded me of me and my friends only they all appeared to be on steroids ). they had fake editorials and fake letters to the editor with some of the dumbest stuff you ever heard. a moron could figure out it was a setup. I dont think it was a scam. just think it was a bunch of egomaniac racists on dope, playing biker. the magazine stunk, the motor stunk and thier attitude stunk. the motorcycle world is better off without 'em. If you find a bike or motor have a party and charge people $1 to beat the thing with a ballpeen hammer. you'll get rich.... its not a bad thing to have a new idea and try to run with it but if its nothing but pride and greed driving you its destined for failure. then ,like excelsier-henderson, if you say its because you were ahead of your time, or blame it on some other bs instead of admitting you made huge mistake with other folks hard earned bread, its a damn shame...

in about '89 we called them to talk about running thier motor at bonneville and when they asked how fast we had gone i told them 147 on our panhead at el mirage and he said they wanted to go faster than that so they sent us a tape of that engine and it was a pile of junk and they never got one running good enough for me to put my rider on it. if you had one i guess it would make a good coffee table or something. you had to buy motor, frame and exhaust. having limited engineering background, mostly school, i'm not an expert but always thought the one direction side thrust on the plain (car type) bearing on the pri side was a weak link. besides the people that made it...other people who tried this stuff had way better design ideas. like john harmon, kenny lyons' big block, victory, house of horsepowers' clell richards and his side by side male rod xl trans shovel head. S&S and hrd/vincent also. also what was his name with top fuel motor he cut the 2 cyl off of and built a lakester out of. believe he was a fellow sidewinder but it has been so long i cant remember. it's funny all these combos were tried way back to the 'teens but just were'nt practical to build. now that the japanese can retool overnight and have cheap labor and materials they are able to grind out these soulless copies of vtwins like its nothing.....

Not tryin to hyjack this thread, but does anyone remember the liquid-cooled shovelhead in the Jammer's Handbook ('82-ish??) That was another idea that I was curious about, and thought might have merit.

also...were any of these Super-Vs liquid cooled???

my backup bike is an old rat Yam*** Venture. it's a liquid cooled V-4. I like it for pulling my trailer as it has gobs of tourque and power, plus it doesn't get hot running hard all day, and pulling that heavy-ass load when out in the desert sun...and man, we pack that sucker full!

The Liquid -cool H-D motors has been around for a long time..In the 30s and 40s miget racers use Kuncks in there race cars,,, R&R Cycle ( Bob Greoge) made them for the Pans and Shovels...

Hi everyone
We are searching for all the people we can find that have any interest in the Super Vee. I have been researching it for years and desperately want one. I have talked to several people who have taken the time and energy to make the thing run. They do run and run well, if you know what to do and how to fix the problems that NC left them with. I have seen them run.

Thank you

Harley is the one that got the Japanese into the business of building motorcycles they shipped the 74 to them and in a very short period of time the Japanese concluded correctly that this was an engine designed to destroy itself. Nuff said.
Yeah, my last Shovel(1978) destroyed itself twice, once after 90k miles the second after 100k.

Supervee engines ever one I saw was crappy . and you couldnt get anything but bullshit llies from nc . 1 of my good friends was a dealer for them for awile back in the 80's best thing he did was get away. I never saw one of these engines run and stay together long. maybe some motorcycle guru with 100,000 dollars worth of equipment and plenty of time could fix it but not you normal guy stay away . build a evo, shovel or even a panhead.

Re: Owning and Building a Super Vee

Because there is a 7 inch gap between the seat and the gas tanks I decided to make another dash and fill it with a couple of gauges not normally put on a V-Twin, a voltage gauge and an oil pressure gauge. I also retained the stock idiot light.
