Re: Generation 1 SuperVee

I am rebuilding the engine right now kind of curious if anyone knows how the oil cooling system works that is my main concern right now because it is a pressurized oil tank. and 60 PSI in an oil tank just don't seem right to me

Re: Generation 1 SuperVee

I`ve got the original factory brochure with parts list, illustrated assembly instruction, specifications and all. It`s a lot of pages, and I don`t want to scan everything if you already have it.
Will scan it during the week if needed. Should I make a new thread and put it in the tech section, in case someone could use it?

Here`s a little teaser:)

I´d rather not. I like keeping all sorts of weird brochures, but PM me with your address and I will photocopy and send it to you. Mine isn`t very clean either though!
Can we see the engine, please ;-)

Calling Red. As far as I know Red is the only guy to successfully make one run.
He use to post on a bunch of different boards but I haven't seen him in a few years. Maybe he lurks on the JJ and can help you.

Re: Generation 1 SuperVee

The biggest problems with the supervee was a total lack of quality control.I hope you have taken the engine down and made certain all clearances are correct and all the pieces are in there.I have all the supervee info at home and will dig it up and get back to you tomorrow.

They made em' seem like a great idea (and I guess they were). When I was a kid probably 35 years ago I saw the first generations. I had seen two locally that ran. We finished one for a guy a couple years ago in the shop. My buddy at Mad Cycle who is one wicked f-ing wrench finally got that bike sorted it. When it left the shop it was a running SOB. It made a ton of power. If you goosed when you shifted to 2nd it would blow the rear tire away. I know it's a motor with a lot of issues. We spent a LOT of time trying to get info to tune it and time it etc. I would say unless you have vast mechanical knowledge, patience and time to tinker stay away from these motors. I wonder if the one we did is
still around. I have never seen it on the road. But, that's not always the bike. It's more so the owner.

Bare in mind guys these motors came out when the most powerful thing to be had was a 74 inch shovel or a new Jap bike. The super Vee made 2 times the horse power of a shovel and was marketed to be easy to assemble and use cheap and plentiful parts (small block chevy). It was a damned good idea. The problem was lack of R&D and selling the motor before it was really ready for production. They are just kind of cool and rare now. They are anything but a good idea unless you score one for next to nothing and can scare up enough info and skills to have it running down the road. Would I take one if somebody gave it to me. You bet. Would I plunk down my hard earned $$ for one (even a cheap one) I doubt it.

I saw these things long before '85, mid to late, 70's. A guy had a couple at a swap meet in Caroga Lake,NY, Royal Mountain Hill Climb.

One ran, sounded like shit and puked oil. The other was a show bike, both were choppers. I saw another in a dresser at Laconia around the same time. It didn't look bad but I didn't see it run.

Never heard anything good about them. Like was stated before, It was a great idea for a big HP motor on the cheap.

Parts weren't that easy to get back in the day. Most built their own machines with used or home machined parts... not from the Harley dealers.

They were bikers back then.
