OK so I was frieghten' home from San Diego Saturday and my bike started to act like it was running out of gas. No biggie i reached down flipped it to reserve...Nothing. Its still sputtering and wanting to die. I get to the the side of the freeway and check a few things. It all looks good. So I kick it over and it lights up! Well it will idle but the minute i give it gas it sputters and dies again. after 2.5 hours on the side of the road I get a tow (thanks =mike=! you saved my ass again)
So I get it home and pull out the petcock its fine, i clean out the already clean fuel filter and take apart the carb. Nothing is wrong. Even put in new plugs. Its still doing the same thing but now its even harder to start up and get to idle. I peeked at the ignition module and its in there tight. Any one have ideas? HELP!
P.S for the whole time i was on the side of the road not one of the 100's of bikes that drove by stopped. Its good to know there is still a brotherhood....NOT !

I didn't read what bike it is, so this maybe worthless, but that sounds like a condenser problem. I had the exact thing happen and it was a little condenser that went bad. Cheap to fix.
Its a 102 CI S&S evo motor with a crane Hi 4 ingition and a spyke staiter plate. No condenser to replace :(

I bet the HI-4 crapped out. People swear by them, but the majority swear at them.

If you get it started again, wiggle the wire lead where it comes out the nose cone, and see if it gets better or conks out.

I'd put money on the HI-4 going south on you.
I had the same thing happen to me last year and it turned out my battery had taken a shit. Test it and see if it has juice. Make sure you put a load on the battery while testing, because they can sometimes have enough voltage, but not be able to take a surge.

Either that or your voltage regulator crapped out.

Those are my guesses.
Update.....my lights will not go on. So I'm now thinking the main power wire (its run thru my frame) or the battery too a dump. grrr. Thanks for the ideas. I'll also look into your ideas too. Thanks again!
Based on that info, I'd say it is a 98% chance it's your battery.

in addition to the battery check nows a good time to verify all your connections, at the coil as well. i had a lead that looked terminated and secure only the wire had broken inside the crimp connector and was just barely making contact.

bike was running fine and then once i got off the highway everytime id accelerate it would sputter. i thought i was out of gas until i got home and started going over my connections.

PS if its the hi-4 might i suggest the dyna -s
(this was not a paid endorsement)
thanks for the backup guys . . . I have $3 on this being electrical .
Does it have a circuit breaker? I had one pop off when I turnd my high beam on
Update.....OK =Mike= wins. I went out and bought (long overdue) a voltage meter/tester and I found my light/brake is draining my batt. So it is electrical! I HATE THE MYSTERIES OF ELECTRICAL! The batt, circut breaker, coil, HI4 are all fine (per the tester). Its the lights thats killing me. So now that I narrowed it down to this. I'm gonna go thru each wire associated with the lighting. Fun times. Thanks to everyone for the help and Ideas! =Mike= you have 3 bucks coming to ya :)
Tell me about the Brotherhood thing!! I rode up to a popular bike hang out up north and got a flat on the way back. It's a two lane road so I know everyone saw me. The girl that was with me even saw guys look the other way as the rode by! I always stop no matter what kind of bike it is to see if I can help. I pulled the wheel and fixed the flat but it sad how things have changed.

I stopped not to long ago on the freeway to ask a rub (didnt know till I had stopped) if he needed help. (he was broke down at night on the damn freeway). I was in my truck and had plenty of tools and offered to help. I even offered to load it up and give him a ride (I always have tie downs and my folding ramp), but he gave me so much atitude I left. I wanted to stab him and just leave him to bleed out.
I hope he was stuck there all night.
I still always stop
I don't think the majority of people that own bikes know how work on them so they don't want to stop and get embarassed when they can not offer any assistance.
YEah I always stop myself too. But I'm thinking of limiting that to those who look like they are not rubs or at least they might appresiate it. I even saw some HOG members. Shit I thought they had to stop for ya. I guess only if your a stoopid HOG memeber too. Fuck them all I say! I've loaded up bikes in my truck, given helmets, fixed bikes, etc. Guess its time to rethink it all. Cheers to us that still think it matters!

Most hog members tend to only ride the coffee pot at starbucks.......Now if ya was settin there with some Harley Davidson coffee, mugs and a box of donuts they might stop.......I'm not sayin all Hog members, but most are fair weather riders and fair weather friends of the road...........

That has happend to me 3 out of the 4 times I have stopped for someone that was broke down. And I'm not an intimidating guy, just a guy who has a strong love for bikes and likes to help a ***** out every once in a while.

My guess is that they are nervous that you are going to think they are stupid for not knowing whats wrong with thier bike. But thats never the case with me, I just want to help.
