Looking at a bike,,mostly a pile of parts. The guy says it comes with a SC title and plate.

My question is,,will an SC title say Harley, Honda, Triumph etc,, or just motorcycle ?

If it is not motor specific,,then can it be used on any bike ?

Varies by state.
NY spec. construc. has neither frame nor eng #'s on title. 7 digit vin on title matches a sticker affixed to neck tube.

Alot of states require retitleing for SC. from another state.

In IL something very old such as my 67 Triumph, which is considered special build, which I only have numbers on the motor and not on the frame they are requireing me to get a bonded title which I am in that process now. So I am not sure what year the title is going to indicate. Still have to have it appraised and then proceed.

I know it's not applicable to your situation, but Missouri along with other states are gettig really tough on Assembled Bike / Special Construction titles. I'm in the process of buying a Spec Const bike from a guy. It had a valid Illinois assembled bike title, but MO wont recognise any other states titles for these kind of bikes and makes you submit all the MSOs and receipts and have it inspected by State Police Troop C before they'll take an application for MO title. Glad I found this out before buying it. He's been working the issue for nearly 2 months with no clear end in site.

It pays to be "friendly" to a BMV employee at your local branch for State specific questions. I used to have one, but they left the job, now I'm in the dark again.

All states are different and some don't honor the same things when transfering, require more inspections etc...

I once bought a special construction that had a Utah title. Somehow the the Utah State assigned VIN was done at an actual HD dealership, and the title read special construction, but also Harley Davidson, no model number. So when I titled it in Indiana, it had the Utah VIN number, but had Harley Davidson on the title, so I was able to insure it as a stock Harley Davidson.

Haven't been that lucky on others......

I am just planning a SC build now and am going to use a clean '75 Shovel motor. Do u know about any NY law on selling the SC titled bike after its built? Or if i can only build one SC in my lifetime?

That would be a real problem if buying a NY spec.const. as NY state confiscates all mso's when they issue a NY title. You do not get them back..... ever!

When NY issues you a S.C. title, they also give you an extra form known as a notice of registration eligibility for use if you sell the vehicle (in addition to the transferrable title)

Also for what it's worth, NY has not adopted and implemented the 2006 federal "one per lifetime" law.

Can someone save me some searching. Does this law state that you can only "own" one Special Construction in your life or "build" one in your life?

I have a 56 B33, Pa title says
Year - 56, Make - reconstructed,Type - MC
Date originally titled - 3-13-72
The VIN is the # on a plate screwed to the frame
That plate is the only ID except for the year and it is removable
I had no problem when I purchased it back in late 70's
