Okay I know you all have been dieing to see a post on how to flake so lets do a small item. This is in response to "the lord of flake" post I saw earlier with that fine work I thought I would show you how to flake a small swap meet item that is not your typical flake job.So if the JJ has the lord of flake and Conder is surely the Emperer of flake I have duely apointed myself "The El'Conquistador of Flake"

Now on with the post:
I picked up a 5.00 cloth pith helmet on the way to the Hamb drags and felt this would be the perfect canidate for a flake job.

1.The helmet must first be sprayed with epoxy buildable primer. This will get really nasty as when you spray primer on cloth it creates fuzzies. Not to worry 4 or five coats and you will be fine. This is done so it can be sanded smooth and and gives the base color something to adhere to.

2. Now that the primer has dried you must block it with 320 grit and sand all the little fuzzies off and make it smooth.once this is done it is now ready to wash down and tack rag it and get ready to apply the under layment color.

3.Now depending on how ya want the final product to appear you can do many things with flake.Today we are gonna do it straight up and simple.Sealer primer, base color that matches close to the flake and flake then clear. Now on with the base color.

4. Now that the candy base is applied and is dried its time for the fun stuff and mixing the innerclear with flake to apply over the base. The mix is based on how thick ya want the flakes to appear the more flake the thicker its gonna cover.I have a top secret form of measure and its like the world famous KFC reciepe you will just have to experiment on your own with this.

5. Applying the flake it is very messy sometimes and you dont want anything near or around you that ya dont want flaked cause it will look like a speckled pup.Usually with my mix it takes three or four good coats to cover and then I come back over with about three coats of straight clear. With this done its time to wet sand with 600 and apply my graphix.

6. Now that you hve wet sanded its time to hand cut your design out of fiska paper and lay it out and mask it up for painting of graphix.

7.Once this is done you untape and are ready for final coats of clear.

8.Now we clear it aprox 5 or 6 coats depending on how much it takes to bury it.now we have a product that is ready to wet sand buff and then pinstripe.you can stipe and clear but sometimes its cool to have some rough edge to it.I will have to update you on the striping and you will find that there are many ways to do a flake job but for you non painter types i thought you would like to see how much effort it takes to do just this little project here.

Thanks and enjoy

very cool and informative for paint newbies like me.
Good stuff. Can I borrow that for St. Patty's?
after i saw that today, i thought i would try something a bit differrnt. i gotta say that my process was a lot less involved. silver base and cinnamon candy and some oooold delglo clear. shoulda worked on the bike today, but i cant find the catalyst for my primer..

are you being serious? wouldn't it be impossible to get the surface flat? you'd have to use like 20 cans of rattle can clear so you mind as well buy the rip off House of Color stuff and equipment.
Yeah, thanks a bunch for taking the time to post that!

That IS a DOT legal pith helmet, right? You need one of the beekeeper masks to wear with it yet.
