Shovelhead vent line question

Ok, ive searched high and low and found mixed answers. Can anyone elaborate on if it would be ok to run just a feed and return oil tank, with a vented cap on a shovel, and just run both "vent" lines (as in the main vent and the stock tank vent line) to the atmosphere? Does the tank need to vent to the engine for any reason?
