Shovelhead carbs question.

Hey guys, I haven't had much time to update my build thread but the bikes coming along. I'll post some new ones soon!

I had a Super E carb on my 74ci shovel motor when I bought it and I was wondering what peoples opinion are about them. I wanted to run something that doesn't have a big honkin air filter on it and I know Super E's don't run well without them.

So I guess the question is what will give me the best performance and less headaches with this motor? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i have the s&s e on my bikes.2 shovels and a pan.no probs.there are some nice small a/c out there.i run a fma skinny stack on one,a mooneyes on another + the s$s cover on another.i do dig those skinny boyle ones though.you'll need to change the enrichner when you change it out.
Put a CV on it and be done with it. They run great.

I have a '75 FLH and I put a CV (Docbuilt) on last year and I'd never go back to anything else. $300, put it on and forget about it. You wont believe how much smoother it'll run and it will improve you MPG. I have a small aircleaner on (I didn't want to cover up the motor). Here are a couple of pictures.

This is what it looks like from the side. It doesn't protrude out much so you don't have to cock your leg around it:

This is the aircleaner on the old carb, but I adapted it to use on the CV so it looks the same.

Yeah, the CV's are probably the best. But there's nothing wrong with a Super E either. Properly tuned they will give just as good mileage (mid 40's anyways) and there's all sorts of smaller air cleaners and even air horns (deflectors) for them.

The C.V. carbs do work well as do the fixed venturi carbs...

Both, once dialed in will perform well...

The Harley CV fits the V-Twin motors real good...Sets close inside the jugs without much bulk to them...

S&S, with the invent of the Shorty carbs also don't have much of a problem with being in the way of the leg....

My $0.02 Carbs are like oil and spark plugs every body has a opinion. Want to be trouble free most likely your setting home watching that OCC bull. They all need something sooner or later. Just my opinion.
38mm adjustable main Bendix is a good all around carb. Easy to mount, easy to tune, easy to rebuild, good performance and gas mileage, compact and tucked in and takes a bunch of different air filters. Super cheap to pick up used and they're everywhere for almost nothing. S&S carbs are also nice.

I agree. I watched this thread when it was first posted and was going to comment, but I wanted to see where it went.

I've run SU, Weber DCOE, Weber DCNF, Dellorto DHLA, Bendix, Super E, Super B, and CV.

They all have there positives, and negatives. Carbs are often blamed when the bike doesn't run right, you have to have everything in tune.

I have ran bendix for years, and a buddie built me a cv. I am still running several bendix carbs, but I also have two bikes with the cv. The bendix is easy to rebuild, and pretty cheap to maintain, but the cv has better performance, and fuel milage. As for air cleaners, depending on how deep your pockets are, you can get just about anything.
The CVs flow better than even the Mikunis. A well setup CV is awesome on a shovelhead.
I have a Cv on mine, at wide open throttle gas will coat my pant leg big time! seen to me it's dumbing to must fuel in it

Sounds to me like you've got reversion going on. What pipes you running?

Speaking of carbs.....

Has anyone tried one of Dan Devinci's CV's converted to a fixed venturi...

Kinda wondering how well that worked out...??
.....No...It don't look like a Fire Plug.....
