Not all are OS. 7/16 are case to trans plate, not primary to trans, those are 3/8. Try a nut of the correct size on it, if it won't work easily it's OS.
I saw someone telling you that there are studs only for the trans to inner primary, I know that 1980 to 1985 had bolts in the front 2 holes and studs only in the back 2 holes. Is this a cowpie trans?
Truth is bolts there are fine, with the caveat that you check the length isn't to long, and use a drop of blue loctite.

That was me. I just double checked my parts book, because I have recently noticed that sometimes my thinker thingy doesn't word like it used to. We are specifically discussing the front 2 primary/transmission mounting fasteners because that's where his oil is coming through. The fact is that in 1980 the rear primary/transmission fasteners were changed from studs to bolts. The front remained studs all the way till '85.
Welcome to the thinker failure club, of sometimes 0%er's of brain function. I have had 2 1985 FXSB's and still own one. Bought the first one new. You got me wondering, about were the bolts are. On Ronnies Harley Davidsons site it shows 4 bolts. Also not what I remember. But I'm not inclined to open mine up to check right now.

Bolts are shown in the chain case housing.
Here they show the 2 studs. trans mainshaft shown in the trans mainshaft and housing. But the studs look to be to the back of the trans.
Regardless back to not all studs. Does make me wonder what difference it would make, i can't imagine it would be much of a problem.
I found this on Ebay that is as you said with 2 studs to the front on a cowpie.

I'll try to remember to report back next time I'm in mine.

Clean the holes and studs, then use Loctite green stud lock. Do you have a cowpie or a rachet top?
