I noticed my starter ring gear has some damage so I should replace it soon. Mine is a laminated gear made up of three layers of steel and looks like it id riveted to the drum. The new gears I find are one piece and have no holes for rivets are these weld on?

Its an early drum the new gear will be one piece and welded on we use a lathe to insure its dead straight to the drum

What year is my set-up, well that is the question, the bike started off as a '76 but as I do more work on it I find parts from other years also as new as '84 or so.

John, so the new gear to get would be the solid, one piece gear and I can weld it on, right? Will this new style gear fit right over the drum? I have a lathe so I can "make it fit" if needed.

They come small as the drum outer diameter had changed over the years and we end up with it on a lathe i make them .001 so its mated tight before we weld it
