Really crusty gas tank cleaning

7578 Views 23 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  Krash Vegas
Ok, I got this bitchin digger last week. The tank is fucked up inside. 20 year old gas, and tank sealer. The rust is flaking and bubbling under the layer of deteriorating sealer. I need any suggestions of what has worked to remove this crap and reseal it.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

another good thing for removing rust is a 10 to 1 solution of molasses in water ! the longer you let it soak . the cleaner the surface gets till it is copletely rust free !
I was wondering how the old peeling sealer acted with the vinigar.
guess I can't hurt anything, its peeling as it is now!

I just got through cleaning a tank with Vinager. It did fairly well, it will get under what has peeled but you will have to try something else where it hasn't come loose yet.
Hoping I can pull out all the loose stuff with needle nose and then reseal over what doesn't pull out. I'll have the tank repainted this winter so I just want to get through the summer before having it boiled down to bare metal inside and out.
