On May 19 while riding close to his home just outside Yosemite. Gary Smaltz and his wife, Lyndia were hit and killed by a drunk driver.

He is survived by a son Gary Lee and daughter. Roxanne, also their stepmother. Lyndia and Gary are survived by their 9 year old daughter Cherokee. Gary was an active California Motorcycle Safety Instructor, motorcycle racer, and avid Indian motorcycle rider. He attended Dixon and other California meets and Road Runs. Rememberances, cards, letters, etc. can be sent to P.O. Box 183, Ahwahnee CA. 93601. A ride from Fresno and Visilia to Yosemite Lake is scheduled for June the 2nd. Information will be posted on the M.A.D.D. site and the Cycletown site

I just rode with him on the L.A. road run a couple weeks ago. I told him I'd see him at Dixon. Life can be cruel. Please be careful out there. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. How ironic.

I was sad to hear this on the news. Apparently a guy [they suspect he was drunk] pulled out in front of them while they were out for a ride. Nothing they could do to avoid it.

I didnt know him, but I used to live not too far from him in Ahwahnee. R.I.P.

That is the biggest reason I don't let my wife ride with me anymore. If something were to happen, and we all know that it can, I don't want to make my kids orphans. I have a friend whose brother was taken out on his bike last week. Especially painful is the fact that most of these accidents are completely preventable. Maybe I'm getting paranoid as I get older, but I look at everyone in a car/truck as if they are out to kill me. Way too many careless/drunk cagers out there. Mr. Smaltz may you RIP.

My Dad and I have been using the Virtual Indian forum for over a decade and Gary was always a part of the scene. I never met Gary in person but he was always one of the leading lights in the online Indian community and always there with e-mail advice, information, stories, parts and so much more.
It's an absolute tragedy that he has been taken like this.
He will be missed.
