POR-15 prep

Going to order some POR-15 tank sealer to reseal a tank I'm stripping a liner out of. Should be no rust. Just had a leak to fix. The kit comes with "Metal Ready" (an etcher I presume) and the sealer. Is there anything else I should do before hand? Stipping out the old liner with MEK.

Used it on a set of fat bobs, I didn't take enought time thinking through the petcock drain area and almost sealed it shut, Maybe the fumes got to me first.

there is the POR15 cycle repair kit that includes a stripping agent to remove the old liner. make sure you get that one. and you may need to try that step...more than once.

the marine clean breaks up old varnish, sludge, deposits etc and degreases the metal.

Then you use the metal ready to etch the metal and create a chemical bond between the metal and the sealer.

and since you are dealing with a used tank with liner etc

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE T. DO NOT TAKE SHORT CUTS.
and once you've invested the hours on the prep.... spend another hour or so making sure the inside of the tank is BONE DRY.

use a hair dryer, flashlight and inspection mirror to check your progress and keep turning the tank as you dry it otherwise you'll get these sneaky very small puddles hiding out
Copy that! Sounds like a good plan. I'm going to take my time. It SUCKS when the shit pulls away because of bad prep. Delt with too many of those!!!

Thanks for the tip!

I used a bunch of old bolts to help break things up. Use corks for the holes, pipe cleaners or something of the sort for the cross over if you have one. Like said prior just follow the directions. tim
How to you keep the petcock from sealing shut?

not sure i know what you're asking the petcock or the petcock bung?
but...
you remove the petcock from the tank

fill it with a bolt or other materials (mentioned above)while you're doing all the prep stages.
when you are sealing the tank, after you have covered all surfaces you drain ALL of the excess out.

with pipecleaners in the tubes you move them every 15-30 minutes or so making sure they dont get stuck in there.
That stuff works great, but MAKE SURE to wear gloves and a mask. the stuff cures (or catalyze's) to moisture so it takes weeks to get off your hands and makes you really sick!

If you have any junk petcocks lying around, put them in and just seal it with them in. Remove once dry, put in the good ones, and you are done. I did this with some of my crappy ones, and it makes it so you don't have to clean the bung threads where they screw in. (Wow "bung" and "cocks" in one paragraph)

Thanks for the explanation. I meant bung, but couldn't remember what the hell it was called for some reason.

Thanks again.
Like you mentioned, take your time. And time is what you may need. I had to recoat a HD factory fatbob because thier sealer was peeling. The whole process took me most of the weekend. Patience when prepping is really important, and oh ya, lotsa ventilation my friend.
Forget the Por and go to the local radiator shop and have them do it. If it leaks it's on them. My guy has the tank back and ready for use in 2 days. Much better then waiting for the POR to dry. My 2 cents.

yep.1 stop shop. forget being a scientist.
Just get 2 bottles of wine, remove the corks. lightly press in the corks to fill the holes. The only problem is, now you have 2 opened bottles of wine. Hmmmm. Have fun!!!

I've done the Radiator shop routine. They were cheap, did a good job, BUT... they guys that did it were FUCKS!!!!! They even told me how much they didn't like my tank and they were questionable at that. Everyone else in town is $65 and they said to give them a week! So fuck all that! They use the same stuff and I'm patient enough to take my time and do a good job. I spent 6 hours prepping a tank for Kreem (the shitty stuff) and then spent quite a bit more time with the sealer and even that turned out awesome!! Flawless! So, if I can do it with that junk I can do it with the good stuff.

What up Raygun Chris?! Chat with you later...
I did mine last weekend based on Todd's recommendation. For a guy that drinks vodka from a nice glass while wearing "mechanic" gloves (I've got a pic to prove it), he actually knows what he's talking about. Do what he says and you will have great results.

Keep in mind my tank was not painted. I waited for everything to dry and after some time I could see a very small puddle. Hit the outside of the tank with a heat gun and it boiled off all the remaining water. Waited for it to cool down, checked for condensation and had at it. Good stuff.<O:p</O:p
