I was able to get into the garage today and do some work on the VL. I cut some gussets and bent some pipe. All the parts are just tacked in. I am going to have a friend Tig it all once I am sure about everything. Thank God for Irish Rich and his OUTSTANDING article on putting a Pan into a VL. I will post some more pics when I get more done.

Well, I appreciate the kind words, but i can't take all the credit on all the modifications. Randy Smith, of Custom Cycle Engineering fame told me how to do the mods over 30 years ago. If Randy told you how something was done, you can bet he'd done it more than once. I more or less just passed it on again.

The only difference in the mods is that Randy would heat the lower tank tube (which a lot of people did, and still do, and it's fine), and bend it up to get the front cylinder clearance. I just added the new curved lower tank tube to mine, with the tube socket that looked like the tubing sockets on the downtube and seatpost.

Well the plan is

21 in the front no brake, 19 or 21 in the rear with a juice early model brake, excelisor tanks, low bars, mid controls and a 49 Pan that I just had rebuilt. I am going to try and use brass for the controls and tank cap and where ever it looks good. I think that I might paint the frame a candy red metalflake???? Not sure yet. The tanks are going to get polished and I might engine some parts. This is the plan so far. As we all know plans do change. Thanks guys and here are that tanks that are going on it

..

well, Rich, you sell yourself short, your excellent writing style and photos really made the 'total package' ..

I have referred countless folks to that very bikernet piece ..

also of interest is this recent discussion on the FlatheadPower forums ..

they get into all sort of detail about mainshafts and offsets for various driveline combos, but there's also some commentary about the motor mounts, something to the effect of "3 of the holes line up fine, if youre not a sissy youll just bolt it in then on that 4th just drill up thru the case .."

some excellent knowlege-base over there, but a few flighty ones in the mix ..

http://www.flatheadpower.com/BB/viewtopic.php?t=6959 (2-page thread) ..

many Thanks again Rich, for all your been-there, know-that input; on Anything and Everything ..

Doug ..

This is cool...there are a few OHV/VL projects coming together here.

Irish Rich...your article is great, the photos make it all real clear.

And Doug that flatheadpower thread had some good info....its just too bad so much of it's controdictory. I'm trying to figure out what has to happen to make a transmition fit right now myself. It looks like the adjuster boss has to be ground off the transmission (hits the frame). And the ratchet top and seat post tube seem to want to share the same piece of real estate...allthough its hard to tell until the adjuster is out of the way. And I haven't had a chance to worry about primary allighnment yet...that post makes me worry a little. Hasn't anyone here done this and can shed a little more light, maybe post a couple of pictures...I like pictures!
