Tried searching with no luck. If this has been discussed previously then I'm sorry.

I've always been a big fan of Indian Larry's bikes and especially "Grease Monkey" with the Panhead motor that had an evo bottom end.

Can anyone explain to me how this was done? Does everything just bolt right up or was there a ton of machining involved?

Thanks

I don't know about evo bottoms, but some folks have put pan tops on cone style shovel bottoms, different barrels and heads, and some oil line issues, I don't think its to big of a deal, but there is a lot more people on this board that know a lot more than I do. Good luck with it.

So I'm assuming the cone shovel cases are different than the evo cases? So the cone shovel cases will bolt right up with the pan stuff? The goal here is to avoid all of the machining business
The base bolt pattern is diff from the EVO to the Shovel...and that's about all on the cases until you get up in the Head Breather years of the EVO.

The Cone Shovel will without any mods bolt down Knuck and Pan jugs to them....

brog:its not that simple, shovel cases whit shovel/pan cilinders wil fit to eachother in terms of boltpatern, panheads wil fit on shovel cilinders no problem.

the tricky word is OILLINES....

pan head oilchannels will not line up whit shovel cilinders as fatr as i know.
so you have to run external öillines from cases/oilpump to heads.

I wish someone made Shovel cylinders with EVO base pattern. I can get a good evo bottom much cheaper than rebuilding a shovel.
Give a call to Axtell....Maybe they can spin you out a set....

Always didn't care to see the 3/8" studs on the EVO base.
Kunck's, Pan's and Shovel's have 7/16 studs....If you drilled out the case on the EVO for the 7/16 would not have much support next to the case bore....EVO's are located more inboard

I know which one I would like to see down there..;)

OEM Panhead bolt pattern will not work with a shovel cylinder.

Is it me or are there some conflicts here? What's the verdict?

What I can gather is, that I can do

-cone shovel cases
-shovel flywheels and pistons
-panhead cylinders
-panhead heads

and from there deal with the oil line issues

Think what he is saying is.........

A pan cylinder will not work with Shovel heads as Shovel heads will not bolts down on Pan jugs.

As far as the Jugs bolting down on Kuncks, Pans and Shovel cases of all years....They will.

Even the U's had the same pattern and also the VL's.....

This is an Shovel cone case...(Delkron)....Has Shovel Jugs with S&S P-Heads, they have the same intake and exhaust as a Shovel ...and head bolt pattern of the Shovels.

The Pans with the T intake has a head bolt right in the way for using Shovel jugs...
When Harley made the Y intake for the Shovel that bolt was moved from the Pan's pattern...

Oil line issues are mute.....(Simple)

Two different fastening techniques that don't really lend themselves to an apples to apples comparison. Intuitively, I feel as you do. However, when I think about it, I see how the the 3/8" studs work because they clamp the cylinder between the case and the head rather than just hold it down at the base. In that situation, a stud that will elongate when torqued probably provides better clamping force through it's elasticity than a short, larger diameter stud with less elongation before yield is reached.
