Hey all, putting stuff back together and have a question or two. Not sure I got the new supernut on tight enough because the unmarked socket on my torque wrench (think is a wheel bearing socket for a truck) got it pretty snug, and then started rounding the corners off. Finished with 1 7/8 end wrench. Since the new nut came with an oring on back, it sits away from the sprocket further than the old one did, but the sprocket doesn't look like it is sliding in and out on the main gear. Other than a visual, I figured my checking the drive gear end play could tell me something.
Guess my main question is, does sprocket locknut tightness affect main drive gear end play? I checked (see photo for my setup), and I was seeing .018-.020 play, while my book says it should be .002-.013. I'm assuming the sprocket has the spacer snug against the main gear, and that any play I'm seeing is the main gear on the mainshaft? Or is it possible I didn't get the nut tight enough? (although I've read a lot of posts warning about overtightened supernuts).
Thanks for any advice (other than that supernuts suck, as I have already pored through pages of those debates, and am not stirring that pot, lol)

To get a truly accurate reading you need to have the indicator mounted solidly to the bike. You might actually be in spec now and getting an additional .010 or so of travel from the bike moving relative to the table when you push or pull the sprocket.

Excellent discussion of important sensibilities.
I've had my own 4 spd(~the ratchet~top, in '97)
apart & did rebuild, yet, without those important shift fork alignment tools, my good friend, Steve {~R.I.P.} double checked with his own tools/coached me at his shop.
Love that my sound point regarding end~facing the lead~in on the big socket
(~i got it, even bought a Snap~on 1, along with the 1 1/8 for clutch hub but, & the other for da motor pulley nut; though it's been so long since I had to use em, I 4get which... 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 for motor ?? & 1 1/2 ? For tranny mdg ??
LUV that safety wired master link, & appreciate knowing about the racetrack safety detail.
My only "valid" "2 cents" here, ... Shovel _Dan78;... Did you happen to install that little angle-shaped 'key~lookin' seal ???
I don't remember ever knowing about it for decades, yet in past decade, a local HD aftermarket shop fellar GAVE me 1, enlightening me about it and how "most folks don't know about it and leave it out".
It is so small, I KNOW I put it in SOME very special place, yet for the life of me, it being since SUM'R of '12, that I CANNOT remember where I stashed it. It IS a SEAL though, in addition to the main seal, and the Supernut seal.
It fits into the mdg when installing the nut.
You're talking about these little metal angles that go in the outboard notch on the main drive sprocket spacer. They're really not so much a seal as a key to make sure that the spacer keeps spinning with the shaft if/when the sprocket nut loosens. A thin bead of sealer (I don't like RTV either, Hylomar or similar non-hardening sealers are much better.) around the inside chamfer where the spacer meets the drive gear face will help seal it up better, and the key keeps the spacer from spinning on the main gear and breaking the seal.
