Knucklehead in RL Frame?

6753 Views 25 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  VL Mike
I once saw a "famous" early drag bike that had a Knucklehead in an RL frame. Can't find the issue, but it was certainly in an AMCA quarterly magazine. Anyone know of it or built a knuckle in the single downtube RL frame? Any pics?

I saw a Knucklehead in Florida at the AMCA Eustis meet, but it too was in VL frame.
A RL frame is too weak for a knucklehead engine, as the RL was 750 cubic inches. What you need is a VL frame, for a 1200 engine. That frame is flimsy as is, but will hold your knucklehead after some rebuilding.

There is a famous RL frame knuck - drag racer - the frame was reinforced in places - hell, I'm gonna go digging but it might have even been a JD frame...

this is useless without pics - I know the bike of which I speak is red and white...

Danny F. would be really useful at a moment like this...
I currently have a RL frame with I beam springer that I plan to radius the top frame brace and gusset the hell out of it to and put a knuckle in it.

I dont have a 45" frame in front of me, but with RL or WL frames, i dont think the bottom motor mounts would work either?. Im not sure but i dont think its just the top frame brace that would need to be altered.
I cannot say, with any authority, that it can be done, but putting A BT into a Four Five frame would entail much more than altering the frame brace. The rear cylinder head wouldn't clear the frame at the seat post area. You'd have to stretch it, probably, 3 or 4 inches. The mounts are wrong and the transmission would be a problem, as well.
I'm sure that somewhere, someone has done it, but I'll bet he wished he had scrounged up a V series frame instead

This looks very much like the one i remember, but i thought it was a red & white bike (as someone mentioned before)? either way, it must've been a VL frame. I remember it as having an I-beam front end for sure. Photo i remember was of the rider receiving for setting a record? Sorry to be so vague, but i fell in love with that bike and am completely interested in finding it again to start a possible new project?

Is it this one?
This looks to be a JDH twin cam with ohv top end. The frame looks like a 1925 to 29 JD frame. I could be wrong of course.

No your right that's what it is.
Here are some pics. of Lee Wickstroms ( Lee's Speed Shop ) Knuckledragger.
I know anything can be done with enough work, but there's the issue of the forged three-speed tranny cradle on the 45" frames. I'd be afraid of the relative obscurity of the three speed and its chances of grenading behind a BT. BTW - that Knuckledragger is one of the coolest knuckles I've ever seen.

It isn't the speed holed fender bike below because what I remember being most interesting was the vertical bracing behind the tranny...

When I bought that $35 JD frame earlier this winter I couldn't get away from pics of that bike...

Danny?
No sorry, can't help here.. I do recall vagely a bike which you discribe though..but I can't find it in my pc pictures.. (as I said earlier, I lost about 4500 pics due to a pc crash last year..)

Here's another piece of fun...
