Not all had ribs, just the pans did, the 40 was used on the pans but wasnt drilled for the outside oiler and had the ribs as the 40 knuck didnt.....Roach.

(Some one modifide it for a pan with inside oiling)

Those numbers are for a 4 rib cover. From 54-57 and on. They are for a Panhead. People would file or grind the ribs down and make them smooth. I have one completely smoothed and chromed and another with the two bottom ribs smoothed. Why? I don't know. Francisco

Sorry man, I had seen some early 40's that were smooth with the breather boss, the casting was reused on the 51-54 pans with the ribs.....Roach.

According to my books:
1936-39 = #584-36 #25216-36 (smooth)
1940-47 = #97-403 with words ALCOA (8 ribs)
1948-53 = #584-48(new 25216-48) #97-403 (8 ribs)
1954-64 = 4 ribs
-1954-57 #25216-54 and #25217-40
-1958-62 #25216-58
-1963-64 #25216-63
-1965 It should be the same as 66-69, but with an oil passage. Not sure
-1966-69 #25218 65 (smooth) This I'm not sure, I had to look at my 69
cam cover.
there are many variations from year to year. FG
