hey guys i have a 74 ironhead that i put the kicker conversion in. worked great for two weeks first kick almost all the time and the last 2 days its slipping real bad and through my knee out 2 days in a row. im about to take it apart tomorrow, is there anything i should look out for or things that can go wrong? any input would be great.

its just super weird it would work awesome for a couple weeks then shit the bed. im thinking maybe the spring. or ratchet plate.

There are two types of ratchet plates (Machined or Stamped)

I like the machined ones better cause for more going on with the tooth count..

U think even the stamped one would last longer then a week
This is a VERY in depth look at the kicker system, its downfalls and ways to make it bullet proof.
This guy (DR DICK) knows his shit.......

Is the kicker shaft bent, and the bushings worn? Whats the clearance between your starter-clutch gear-ratchet plate? You might need a longer spacer.
If you got it from Tedd you got what you got.

The bushing on the kicker gear tends to wear out pretty regularly causing slippage which leads to a painful hyper-extension of the knee...
these are all new parts, mostly USA made, but some tiawanese. so I will be interested in what could fuck up in 2 weeks of use? I could see even a year but 2 weeks is really early. and it worked really good in those 2 weeks and then all of a sudden went to shit. so Ill post pics when i finish pullin the clutch basket
hey guys so I have to check a couple things first when i get home. but it looks like something is causing the gear to not completly engage with the ratchet plate. i took a couple of pictures of the wear marks on the ratchet plate and only half of the teeth have wear marks. the guy at our local shop (who knows his shit) gave me a couple ideas on what to check and he gave me a big twin spring to try out because it is alot better than the sportster one. so im hoping this is the case because it will be a easy fix.
does anyone no where to buy a machined one or a hardened ratchet plate.
im also looking for a good spring as i think that the spring isnt pushing the gear out enough. because it is only partially engaging

I do....

Also when the new plate is being being installed, would be a good idea to use a tool to keep the center on the money....

I have this tool for doing that job...Will post a photo of it tomorrow...

On the gear, need to make sure of the bushing not going so far into the gear keeping it from making full engagement.

Wouldnt u need a shorter spacer to bring the clutch basket closer to have more engagement. Or a better spring off a bigtwin

I know, but I'm not going to tell you. That's funny...kinda.
Be careful with that slipping ratchet,I also had a 74 xlch that was slipping. One day it skipped through and snapped my knee backwards.Fractured tibea plateau, after surgery, with a couple of screws and staples,it was never right and developed arthritis.Suffered with it for 30 years, until Sept. of 09 I got a full knee replacement. That damn Sporty!! Ha Ha . Just get it right before it hurts you.

I know this is for different years but isnt everything the sam other than the spacer length and material. so i could use my old space and just use the spring, gear and ratchet plate??
