i snatched these out of one of my pops' parts boxes. i want to use them to make a set of narrow frisco style bars but dont want to hack em up if they are rare or something. any insight is appreciated
If so - I would sell and buy something else to chop up. If they are (someone can verify) they would net a decent price. At least they were going high-ish buck when I Was looking for a set.
Those are '73 or thereabouts Sportster or sometimes Superglide buckhorns. There are no holes drilled for switches 'cause they were using disc brakes with the switch boxes by then, but it was before the govt. mandated left side shifting and return spring throttles. They're kinda rare, especially if they're straight and the chrome is decent. (I've got a couple sets of dresser bars that are the same way.) You should be able to find a cheap earlier pair to cut up. Look for holes drilled for switches and internal wiring. and pre '65 will have an internal control on the left as well, for the spark advance.
They have what looks like a throttle cable on thhe throttle side inside of the bar. There is a switch with 3 positions on the left bar. Does that make them pre65? Thanks for the info. OK, I didn't see any switches or holes for them in the pics. HD started using that style of internal throttle sometime in the 50's. (there was a different style before that.) Stock cable was solid wire, not stranded, and there was no return spring. The left side of the earlier bars looked like the right, with the slot and the smaller diameter and had a twist grip control for the spark advance. The bars were also drilled for a hi/lo switch, a horn button, and if equipped, a turn signal switch. If you've got a three position switch, it's the TS one that's still there. About '66 on, HD started using an automatic advance for the timing. After that, the left grip looked like what you have. About '72 or '73, HD went to the disc brakes and the switch boxes on the M/C and clutch perch, so those bars don't have switch holes, but do have holes on the bars for the clips that held the external wiring harness. About '74 HD started using the outside throttle and the bars are single diameter without the ferrules or anything else.
You're missing at least the spiral for the internal throttle, and probably more. (I can't see.) There are two types that fit those bars, one pulls the cable, the other pushes the cable. Try to find an old HD parts book with an old diagram, or maybe there's one in the print V-Twin catalog. These bars also take two 1 1/8" grips.
