My friend Andy sent me this stylish pic of his dad in around 1958 at about 16 years old. Looks like a badass on a BSA to me

57 58 would be the right year Bsa used the ariel front and rear hub suposedly interchangeable hubs as well as other parts as BSA bought out seely oak in the 40s and had the spares and tooling so why not

by the way the ariel ariel rear wheel of the time doesnt fit the bsa bsa wheel exactly so if for some reason you need one make sure of the make

as to BSA b33 or b31 that would be just a guess as they both shared the b31 frame tank badge style was available 57-62.... cool pic of period bob job

Didn't the BSA's in that timeframe have just the "three rifles" by themselves embossed into that right angled gearcover? I don't see that in the first picture.

Man, you guys are good! Thanks Rich and Classic Bike. I'll try to get a close up, more high resolution scan of that engine area. The push rod tube area is all blurry and that seems to be the deciding area. The photo is supposed to be from '57, so it is probably the '56? I'll get a better scan and I'll post it again. Thanks again for helping out. Knowing Andy, if he can figure out exactly what model/year it is, he'll be on the hunt for one to rebuild...

It could be a '56. They used the wide ariel hubs from then on. B33 or B31 is impossible to tell.
They are not expensive but I saw a B31 engine (no carbs) with a ridiculous €1300,- price tag at a swap meet recently. Luckily my dad raced B33s for years and has a shitload of engines.
I will use one for my next project.
I will also try to gather as much british stuff from his buddies before they realize what gold mine they are sitting on. Featherbeds, GP carbs, Goldstar engines etc. etc.
