66 BSA Hornet 650. No lights to worry about...Yet....

The bike has a Boyer system, and I just put a new battery in the bike. Coils are new as well. When I pull the plugs, I dont get a spark - on either cylinder.

Anybody ever had a Boyer ignition go bad? All the connections appear to be corrosion / grease / condensation free.

Any ideas?

Are your new coils 6 volt or 12 volt? And no insult intended, are you sure your battery's fully up?

I beleive the coils are 6 volt. The battery is brand new, and has a full charge. I even put the bike directly on the charger. I'll pick up a test light tonight and test the coils....

One more thing I should mention, it ran great until it was parked last July...

Have you done any welding on the bike with the boyer hooked up?I would also recomend unhooking the battery cables while charging the battery.One voltage spike and poof she is gone.If you still have the God of darkness wiringing(lucas)I am probably aint gonna be much more help.Cause all of I get i ripp that crap off and rewire 12v neg ground and use a harley coil.Mine(knock on wood) has not failed me yet to start on first or second kick and runs like a champ.Also I understand 12v neg ground and have a total of about ten wires on my bike.I am also using a small 12v gel cell battery the size of a couple cigarette packs.(power wheels)I think you only need 5 amps for a boyer system if i remember right and it helps keep the lights bright at idle.

Ok, so a little more info. I grabbed a test light and found the following:

The BSA is wired as positive ground.

The fuse coming of the - side of the battery is good.

When switched to the "on" position, I have juice coming from the on/off switch.

I have power going into the Boyer box.

I have power coming out of the Boyer box when I kick the bike over.

I have power going to the - side of the first coil. (A good strong light).

Power coming out of the + side of the coil is very weak.

Power going to the - side of the second coil is very weak.

No power coming out of the + side of the second coil. (goes to ground).

When i switch the leads to the first coil and the second coil (swapping coils) I get the same result.

Ground coming from the second coil appears to be good.

When I put the test light on the output side of the coil (where the spark plug wire attaches) on either coil, I get no spark.


So, am I correct in thinking that I have 2 bad coils? If so, should I replace the coils with 3 ohm units or 5 ohm units? Can I use a Harley dual coil on the bike, and would that give me any benefit (other than using one coil)?

i am running a harley green. but you could have yours checked to see how much resistance it has. You can also run a dual honda but they probably are around the same price.

Ok, I guess I am going to buy a new coil. I'd like to go with a dual coil. (single coil, dual outlet). What is the difference between a single fire and a dual fire coil, and which do I need?

dual fire coils fire points and plugs together

regular dual HD coil for electronic ignitions is just right for a boyer system...3ohms?

Ok, so I put in a new dual fire HD coil. Still had no spark, but I had a good spark coming through the coil. Problem one solved....

Figured the only thing left was the plugs. The bike had Autolite plugs, they had maybe 50 miles on them. Changed the plugs to Champions and the bike started ont he first kick.

Autolite plugs suck.
