Hello, can anyone identify this petcock on early Harley Sportster gas tank and if its rebuildable? Where can I find a rebuild kit or replacement? Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Joseph

That is a common sportster petcock. Commonly available at just about any aftermarket company. JP, VTwin, etc.
Not rebuildable and the Copy Cat models made by those companies are of poor quality, if this is not a restoration the best bet is a Pingel 90 deg outlet with reserve...
Thanks for your replies, no its certainly not a restoration. I took a look at the Pingel site, they are not cheap but I guess in the end you get what you pay for!
Pingel makes nice stuff ... they price it handsomely ... get a Guzzler and run the big line or you will starve when you run it hard at the big end.

Only 45 cubic inches will be drinking from it ;)
I bought the cheap copy of this shut off from V twin. It leaked and flowed poorly. This shut off is also used on big twins after the "rod thru the tank" style went away in 1966. It was replaced by the japanese keihin shutoff (22mm) in 1975......Bill

I had a Cheap Petcock not long ago, the internal rubber came apart and clogged my S&S Fuel Valve on the carb in the Picture, sputtered down into town and had to remove the float bowl at a station, there layed the piece of Taiwan Crap rubber seal... the Pingel will last you a few decades, the sealing part is a machined fit, no rubber to be eaten up by the Solvent that they are selling in place of Gasoline.. Pingel= worth it..
Took the sound advice given over here, bought a Pingel and I'm very pleased with the product. Dealt with Troy through the Pingel website, he was very helpful and gave excellent service.
The Golan petcocks are the best of the best out there check'em out.

You're not kidding.

I bought one about ten years ago and the threads were so poorly formed it would not even start in the hole. Looked like it was cast in two haves where the molds didn't line up. Big seam down the middle and the threads on either side didn't match. I keep that one in my box to show people who are too eager to want to replace stuff rather than fix it.

a petcock is nothing more than a shut off...
then again i never shut off...
it's a valve. go to lowes if you dont care how it looks... to be so cool. farm around and think OUTSIDE the box... it will come to you.

think simple. you;d be amazed at what people have gotten to work only to become the next cool thing...

simple is best. understand it you will get it.
Well for my two cents. I would do the pingel because they are top quality. A cheap knock off that could leak may cause a big fire and then you get to start over. So don't try to save a buck on this part.
