Discreet Heat Check (VIN #s)

So you find an old engine and frame in a ditch with a big sign on it that says FREE along a deserted road (in a state that titles all vehicles) ...

The engine and frame have matching numbers and you think you'd like to build a bike out of them. Now BEFORE you go spending anything on it, you'd like to make sure that it's not still warm and that some poor mother's son is not still crying over its absence.

How would one go about that without exposing themselves to unwanted attention from...well, let's call it 'authority'?

Any internet databases, private companies, or other methods that you guys have found handy? I mean...other than walking up to a cop on the corner and asking him to run your numbers.

1) Cop friends. (I can't believe I have any, either).
2) Call the DMV and tell them you're considering purchasing said vehicle and wanted to check the numbers.
3) Cop friends.

LOL! Looks like it's option number 2 for the Big Daddy.
My buddy has a number for a lady that can get a title for anything here in town, what the hell did you find, and when will I see it.
