Ok,, just confused about this. Have a frame and it is the 2nd one I have had where the seat for the race is like a mile deep ! Why is that ? Had an old CB 750 that was teh same way, also takes a 1 3/4" OD race, do I just add a spacer to bring the race back up level to top of the neck ? Why are they made this way ?

So you are saying the neck takes the races without the customary cup?

Tes takes teh Triumph type cup..but teh recess seems twice as deep

it doesn't matter how deep the seat for the race is ,because the race will have his collar(edge) on the neck anyway
so the race cup won't fall in the neck

and this way its easier to take out the old ones because there's space to put a pipe in the neck to hammer out the old cups

as long as the center nut tightens down on the bearing its ok.
if not you can add a spacer on top off the bearing but no bigger than the inner race.
if it sits on the outer race you wont be able to tighten the steering.

Yes, the sparer did come to mind,,just seemed like overkill

that center nut has to tighten down onto the bearing center to hold it in the taper/cup,and adjust steering head play.if the bearing is in too deep a spacer
is the easy way,having a longer center nut made would be overkill.

Triumph OIF's are the same, recessed into the neck like that.
