Was wondering if any one has any experianse with single layer steel base gaskets on a panhead. I bought a cometic topend gasket set for my 49 pan and the base gaskets that came in it are single layer steel. Sould I use them or get fiber or use them with some copper coat or other sealent? Any help would be great.

I would use the steel base gasket with the copper coat and be done with it. Paper gaskets on my 96 pan with copper coat leaked. Went to James steel gaskets and copper coat and haven't had a problem yet at 12,000 miles. Did the same on the copper head gaskets and no problems with 10.1 compression.

Are the Cometic or James gaskets better. It seems those are the two I see the most. At least on the Bay.

The steel base gaskets have their own "sealer" dont add anything to it.. Just run em as the come out of the package. Proper torque is the key.
