This one was always my favorite. A true showbike in any country.

This BSA fascinated me

And then there were Horex Motorcycles. I bought one when I was 14 to build a chopper. Here is what inspired me.

My parents were not happy

They were afraid I would hang out with these guys

But when it was all said and done my old man approved.

About a year earlier I had it finished like this. I was 17 and a half and riding around without a license. The good old days. I always like the second incarnation like in the pic above with my dad better.

Great pics and story, interesting to see the Iron Cross etc so openly displayed within Germany, even back then. Love the pipes, are those 1 into 2 exhaust off old Honda CBs??? Growing up in Aus I recall a lot of 1% ers on Jap bikes, something that is now conviently forgotten by some folks :)

There is really nothing illegal about the Iron Cross. It is for instance still the symbol of the german airforce -Luftwaffe.
Now Swazis and SS memorabilia still sends the dogooders into orbit:) And yes it is illegal do display them.

Check out the drag bike in this picture:

Very cool pictures man! Thanks for sharing

-Justin
I wish it was Justin. That would have meant that there was drag racing back then:)
It is a custom road racing bike - cafe racer - built from a 2 cylinder Horex Imperator Twin. There were some very nice cafe racers in town but unfortunately I was only interested in Choppers.
One of our friends had a 750 Norton that was stripped down so much that it was light enough to be carried into his second floor apartment because he did not have a garage. I wish I had a pic of that bike. Handmade alloy frame. lightening holes everywhere. Bare minimum.

Ah Gotcha, none the less still a very cool bike, I kind of thought road racer at first but looks pretty long in the pics. Thank you for the information. That Norton would defiantly be something to see, alloy frame, sounds pretty wild!

I was such a narrow minded fool back then. So many cool things I never bothered to take a picture of.
Love your bike Justin. I always look forward to the next installment.

Great ... I started chopping a Zündapp and then Beemers before used to play with NSU Konsul Choppers. Still doing it today - beside the Harleys.

Save the choppers
Horst - Which magazine do you write for? I always have guests from the old country bring me care packages of german candies and magazines.
Those custom Konsuls are wonderful. Such a good looking motor.

Great pictures! There are some some serious pipes going on there! Spent 2 days in Hamburg but I was 18 yrs to late apparently.
Thank You Whtwtr. That scene I captured is now completely gone. Replaced by a new generation of bolt on artists.
I think it was over by 1980.
