Hello, please see my "into" thread if youre interested in what im about.

Well a few weeks ago I picked up a new project in addition to the too many I already have going on. its a mix of parts between 69-71 somewhere between a bonneville & a trophy. no title & pretty much a basketcase but has a decent looking motor without any electricals. the motor turns but i have no idea what the inners look like yet. its a 70 trophy frame with a welded bolt on hardtail. i got it from a friend for $650 which seemed like a deal since he threw in an extra oil in frame to sell and a jap fork & front wheel in addition to the ugly, way too long chopper tubed 71 triumph fork thats on the bike. its got 71 conical wheels, a 71 tank thats in great shape, he also threw in a set of drag bars in addition to the mini ape hangars and a brand new seat. so i get this heap home & start tearing it down so i can see what i got myself into since i bought it on the fly since so many other people were bugging him for it. i find that both wheels are badly dented & the rims need to be replaced. no biggie, im condifent that i can lace the hubs up to "round" rims (which i scored from another friend, very cheap), needs all the electricals, needs stock front end, the motor needs to be gone over since it hasnt run in years, needs tires, blah blah blah. so this is what i wanted - a project bike. i love building my own stuff. i didnt want one that was already complete. i like to do it my way. so this seemed like a decent price for what i wanted. well the past 2 weeks ive been into this thing hardcore. i stripped it down to the frame, i already ordered new tires, tubes & some other random parts. i polished up the new rims i will be lacing over and today i started working on the frame. this is where the wind was taken from my sails. i was busy cutting off all the random goofy stuff that was welded onto the frame by the few previous owners and was hoping to fill a bunch of the holes that were drilled in it too. well i flipped the frame over to find that the right lower tube of the hardtail is broken completely apart. whatever put the huge dent in the rear wheel also broke the frame in the process. now, the wheels were one thing - i can deal with that. the motor, i expected it needed to be torn down. the fork absolutely needed to be thrown away and replaced with a stock length or shorter one. but now im looking at replacing the frame. this wasnt supposed to be a huge project, it was just going to be a side piece while its too cold to work on the car. im really bummed about the busted frame. ive been super stoked about the project since ive got it. its all i talk about & i do nothing but search for parts & read about the old bikes to become familiar with whats what. now i dont know what i should do. should i bail & just part everything out? should i stick it out & try to fix the broken & bent frame? i may be looking at major motorwork too, ill find out next week. its just turning out to be way more that i had bargained for & im bummed. what do you guys think i should do?

hey, sorry about the super long winded post. i was kinda on a rant. just a tad stressed about the bike but i do think it could be fixed. it was just a surprise to find the frame broken like that. i did notice the rear looked a little tweaked when i got it & i shouldve taken a closer look. its cracked across the rear bolt hole on the right bottom tube where it meets the main frame.

this is the 1st time i set a budget and a short timeline to finish something so i think im stressing myself out about it more than i should. ill post some pics a little later this week. hopefully some before & after pics if i can get the frame fixed up.

damn thats a long post
HAHAHA! that pic is hilarious.

yeah sorry again about the crazy rant. i had the numbers run and it comes up clean. i think the story behind the bike was that it fell apart years ago & has been passed around for the past 10+ years. looks like ill be the only one brave (or stupid) enough to bear down on this bitch & get 'er rolling down the road. my stepdad built a custom a few years back & told me how i can get a title for this heap, the same way he did for his. im taking the motor up to a local triumph guru tomorrow so he can tell me whats what. i could pull it apart myself, i have the manuals & all that but i dont know all the tricks of the trade. he rattled off at least a dozen or so things that are typical on an old 650 twin & he has piles of new parts for them.

im not home right now but ill get those pics up soon. feel free to point and laugh too. i know exactly what it will look like when its done & its no joke.

thanks again for the motivation boost. im sure ill be hitting you guys up for more of that along the road. my plan is to finish it by mid may & ive been keeping a sort of journal of what i do each day and how much im spending so i could post that and the before & after pics when its all done.

rules for building a BRIT the first time `round

1) Never set a timeline or a budget....you`ll bust both of them

2) it takes alot of asking totally stupid fucking questions on alot of forums to get good answers

3) BUY a manual.....you can describe the shit all day long on the net but a manual with good pics in it will help you more than any forum will

classicbike.com (Dave Stuebe) has some cool manuals on disc if ya absolutely have to build the thing on the computer desk

4) Buy a damn manual like everybody else....I can`t say this enough

5) be prepared to waste money on the wrong parts and stuff you don`t need....as a matter of fact, I have found at least HALF of the jackasses out there selling Brit stuff are clueless as to what it truly goes on and will say anything to get yer $$$$.....buy an interchange or part # list for Triumph and be on the safe side

6) plan on TEARING the motor down ALL THE WAY....and CLEAN THE SLUDGE TRAP......"What is the sludge trap?" you ask.....well, you will find it`s location, description, and purpose in the manual you are going to purchase.....REBUILD THE MOTOR.....or just throw money in the trash right now before you get started

7) type one or two questions at a time.....anxiety attacks are no fun for any of us to witness on the forum

8) If you have little time or little money, a Brit is not exactly the bike you wanna learn on......sure they are considerably cheaper to build than HD, but don`t plan to budget until you know what your gonna get yerself into as far as the MOTOR

9) do your homework BEFORE you buy parts

10) did I tell you to buy a manual?....cuz you need to

11) DO NOT.....buy Brit stuff on ebay unless you know the dudes reputation or want to take the chance with your money
my personal recommendations are:
Dave Stuebe (classicbike.com)
Four Aces Wes
Dragon Doug Drake (comes highly recommended)
Mardukis Vintage (Duki) (also recommended)
and forgive me if I`ve left anybody out

12) ask yourself "Do I really have the time and resources to commit to Brit?".....cuz if yer not sure, then buy something more familiar

seems to me,you are making this way fuckin harder than it has to be.....if you are stressin out after just a few weeks of tearing shit down and researching, then man you need a script of Xanax cuz the fun and games have ONLY JUST BEGUN.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

the end result is worth ALL the shit in the word though

so what you`ve got right now is a $650 non-running motor, some scrap metal, and a busted frame.....hell, man that describeds damn near 75% of ALL the Triumphs out there right now.....fret not, young naive....for all is still well in the world.....welcome to the British side

fix the frame....unless it`s bent....bent=trash....cuz it`s just cheaper to get another.....don`t trash the front loop....cuz as long as it`s straight, you just buy another hardtail section and weld it on if you don`t fix the old one

Now.......go buy a manual before you do anything else

slim,

thanks for the input. yeah, ill admit, i was a little overwhelmed with so many things being f'd up. not sure why i lost my mind over it. its a bike. ive been doing cars for years & they have 10 times more places for problems. my cars are oddballs too so im familiar with searching everywhere for parts. im actually surprised at how many places carry old brit stuff.

i have a bit clearer head now. i ordered about $400 worth of parts from Dave from classicbike last night. I also brought the motor down to the king of triumph guru's last night. we talked for a while about the motor & the overall project. he is tearing the whole thing down to see whats going on. he gave me the min. & max. possible cost & im cool with it so i told him to dig in.

the frame's front loop is fine but the rear is tweaked & bent so, like you said, i may have to cut & grind it off & start with a new rear.

ive got a lot of manuals already. they helped me out several times so far.

i needed the motivation from you guys on here because this bike turned out to be a lot more f'd up than expected but im going to work through it & take each part at a time. ill hopefully have the front end altogether & rebuilt next week & then ill figure out the frame situation - all while smitty is getting the motor together. i know what its like from working on cars where the more BS you go through building something, the more pride & personality it has in the end. ill keep you all posted.

thanks again for the tough love.
