We have a 1970 650 Lightning with 1300 miles. Been sitting in storage for 5 years in the BAHAMMAS (salt air). The bike is ready for updating (undecided direction). Lots of rust on chrome.

My first thought was to get it running (fresh fluids) & then decide if a tear-down is warranted. Also see if the speedo works for accurate mileage.

I know all about the sludge trap. What I don't know is if stagnate oil in a salty environment will contribute to any serious issues with the trap.

Would you tear it down?

How does drained oil look ?
Are you keeping it or flogging it on ?

If the oil you took out looks fairly clean, the trap probably isn't full. I'm assuming you have drained the crankcase too.

is the rest of wear and tear, rust excluded, consistent with low mileage. Invariably one pot would have been left with a valve open and therefore potential for corrosion /rust in one bore if stored in salty/humid environment. If not seized and all above checks out i'd risk it.
ps if you do customise it can i put dibs on seat and rear fender 8-D
