Hey Guys,

Just wondering if someone could help me out. Bought these BSA forks off eBay and fitting them to my pre-unit triumph. I am just having some trouble cos I am not sure what type of BSA they are and I can't seem to find a wheel to fit. The diameter of the hole where my axel goes through is 11mm. But most of the BSA/Triumph wheel's I've seen have a 17mm diameter axel. Any idea on what sort of wheel i should be looking for?

Just want to get this thing rolling soon.

Hey Greg

Smarter people than me will comment on the forks, I just love the pictures mate. Kick drum, two bongos and a pushbike, forks wresting on a disused weight bench ? bare feet How Aussie is that ?? only thing more Aussie would have been wearing thongs.

At a guess they look like c10/c11 bsa forks that use a cup for brake plate location and it would explain the small diameter axle holes.There may be a part # on the underneath of the fork yoke which may help narrow it down

Drew71: Yer mate what can I say can't hide where you are from. Actually wouldn't mind if the shed had a bit of clean up, so it could start looking like a proper motorbike workshop.


Daturat100r: I thought it might have been a BSA c10/c11 set of forks. But wasn't sure for certain. The 11mm axle is making it hard to find a wheel to run on it. Any idea on what kind of wheel would work with this front end? No part no. on the underneath of the fork yoke either. But does have WN 64 engraved on the of the triple clamps.

Looks like the split bush would come out of the one slider, which would give you the 1966 style Victor fork and I would guess that either the 7 or 8 inch BSA 1/2 hub front brake wheel and axle would go in. b40s, early B44s also used that cup located brake plate but I also think that some of the earlier, lightweight B31s used similar forks. Yokes should give a better idea as to the original application.

If it was me, I'd take those 7/16 out to 11/16 in a heartbeat & then worry about the width & brake anchor later. but thats just me.

and I'd never tell anyone I was running the front end off a 250cc motorcycle

So standing infront of the forks, with them on the bike. The Right leg has the split bush, no thread and the left leg is the 11mm with the thread.

Flying Squirrel: If I knock out the split bush, it would make the diameter would roughly be 20mm. I'm guessing around 17mm if I clamped it shut with the nut and bolt. But how could I fit a 7 or 8 inch half hub front brake and axle if the left side with the thread is 11m?

Drew71: Sounds tempting...

I have came down to a few options
Option A: I find a wheel that fits might be a C10/11 wheel (might even be 19/21 inch if I'm lucky)
Option B: I knock the split bush out and machine the left leg out to 17mm (should I trust the forks then???)
Option C: Get a later triumph/BSA wheel with a 17mm axle and machine it down to 11mm and rethread it?

c10/11 used a 19" front wheel and a 5 1/2" front brake and the whole fork assembly is physically smaller than the similar era b or a series fork. I had a set a couple of years ago that came with a b31 but there was no real way they could be made to fit without lengthening the stauncheons because of the shorter stem.Out of interest here is a wheel for sale: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=375988017

Yer, Had a look on there. Still really stuck with the front wheel thing. I'm keen to get the bike at least rolling soon. I looked at earlier wheels like the Bantams and that. That had an 11mm axle, but the brakes are too small and the wheel are really built for smaller bikes than a 650cc. I'm wondering if I should knock out the split bushing and then get a later wheel and machine the thread side down to 11mm.

might be better to find an A series or B series set of forks and that would open up a greater selection of wheels and brakes you can use ,the 1/2 width finned 8"goldie / early a65 would suit a bobber style machine perfectly.
7/16"(11.1mm) axle might be a little small for a 650 fitted with a larger brake though have seen a nice front brake setup using two half width hubs parted off and welded back to back to make a cool looking twin single leading brake

Ah yer it's an idea . But I kind of don't want to find another set of forks, as these cost me a bit of money. Might have to find the right wheel or machine down the axle to 11mm and use a later wheel.
Kind of a difficult situation with me trying to get this bike on the road soon.

Just had a question guys. I am fine with machining down the axle to size. But my biggest hurlder is finding a wheel that will fit in betweent he forks. I only have room for a 4.5inch wheel including the brake plate and lever. Which isn't leaving me with many options. Anyone know of some wheels that may fit? Even if it is a japper?

Take the forks to a wrecker and look for an offroad wheel out of something common xl/xr 185/200 and already fitted with a flangeless alloy 21" rim.The 185 motors are use here in NZ for a class of midget car racing so engines are really scarce but cycle parts are dime a dozen.I have a front and rear off an xr185 and can dig it out and measure for you if you need.I was thinking of fitting front and rear to my b31.
