That's why it's important to ride like you're invisible and everyone is out to kill you.

from the original post on another board -

Motion blindness, aka Target Fixation

This is not from me. I was Navy Fire Control, we didn't fly aircraft, we shot them down.

Take it from a former Naval Aviator, this is a great illustration of what we were taught about scanning outside the cockpit when I went through training back in the '50s.

We were told to scan the horizon for a short distance, stop momentarily, and repeat the process. I can remember being told why this was the most effective technique to locate other aircraft. It was emphasized (repeatedly) to NOT fix your gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any single object.

The instructors, some of whom were WWII veterans with years of experience, instructed us to continually "keep our eyes moving and our head on a swivel" because this was the best way to survive, not only in combat, but from peacetime hazards (like a midair collision) as well. We basically had to take the advice on faith (until we could experience for ourselves) because the technology to demonstrate it didn't exist at that time."

[Target fixation is also a phenomena that plays into this.]

Or because they're looking at their cell phones.

Pretty cool though, if you speed it up you can actually get that reversed rotation effect/trick. And if you keep focusing on the different dots you don't lose any of them. Most drivers are simply oblivious anyways.

Like Bustedlifter said. It's our job to make ourselves seen. I stand on my pegs or swerve my bike around when i feel it's needed.

i've been hit twice when i was absolutely sure the person saw me... one even stated after the accident "oh, i did see you but didn't think you were there"

getting hit sucks. now i ride like everyone is out to get me and i'm invisible, just like the voices in my head tell me.

Great information... Shitty thing is even if everyone was taught this, they have no need to use it cause most motorists are just there in the car just like if they were on the couch watching the test bars....

Back in the '70s I had some MFER deliberately pull out in front of me while I was riding my Norton. To this day I don't know how I laid it almost on its side and got around him as I was on a Bridge crossing over the 805 In San Diego. He then proceded to chase me down and try to run me over. I lost him in a housing track. Ever since then I KNOW everyone is out to kill you! Trust NO other vehicle on the road. Expect the unexpected.:confused:

I had one say after a real close call, "oh I saw you, I figured you would stop." So when I blasted him in the face I said, "oops, I fugured you would duck"

I also see riders who rely on traffic signals/signs to make sure that a vehicle doesn't cross their path. Just because they're supposed to stop or yield, doesn't mean they will.

Interesting how the eye and brain work...or don't. I'll stick to what I told my son last year...have fun, but be alert and drive like everybody else out there wants to kill you.

...the only way the fuckers in cars do not hit from behind is have a new fast bike...but then, you would take the problems to other situations
