I work with an old flatrack racer, he was just telling me the answer to this yesterday. He said they use them for leverage, he said you push into it, to kind of lock you in when you are tucked. it made sense when he told me.

Those were actually used to keep you from flying off the back before they were used to seat fat skanks.
