I was talking to a dude today about various metal flake methods/techniques and he suggested using crushed abalone shell. Take a screw driver and chip out the irredecent inside layer, crush it with a hammer, and either add it to the clear or sprinkle it over the wet clear coat layer. Anyone ever tried this? This is definitely something I'd like to try, especially as my neighbors always go abalone fishing. I'd like to also hear some other unique paint techniques.

I've read about the old timers using fish scales and abalone shell too, but I'd think for the time and effort expended you'd get a better result using something from an established manufacturer. If you try it, check Grainger or Mc Master Carr for micro fine filtering screens so you can sift the powder to get a uniform size of particles.

I'd be a little worried about the organic matters reacting with a modern paint. You can always do a little test panel and see if you like the results. On a bike with the limited surface area to be painted, you might get aresult that's really unique. Then you could keep wveryone guessing about what kind of paint you used.

Try it please so I can learn from your mistakes. I know, I'm a selfish pig, just ask my ex.
