The cable goes down through the mixing chamber cover, through the brass guide, through the spring and anchors in the notch in the bottom of the choke slide. When all assembled and adjusted properly they should bottom out in the carb throat, or they will have little or no effect. You're going to get a lot of advice about tossing them out and running without the chokes at all, but personally I like to leave the chokes in place because does assist with starting in cold weather.
