As I saw the thread of my friend Cptn. Fred, I remebered that I never introduced myselfe, so - lets go, sorry for my bad english :

I'm running a little workshop in Germany/Berlin/Kreuzberg. In 2002 I bougt an EMW bike in hundreds of parts, started to puzzle them together an getting a driving licence.....
The EMW is a communist version of a 30's BMW, but thats another storry....

In the beginning the bike was more or less original, but I started verry quick to change this and that....

A EMW looks like this:

In 2007/8 started to make a radical cange. First the potoshop-chop:

understanding theory:

build:

and full of pride:

a year later complete modification of the motor:

build crankshaft, modern piston, lighter valves..

hotter camshaft (adjustable)

first try:

homemade air filter:

and then a lot of trouble at first.... it took me nearly the whole year to find some problems, but now it runs realy great!! ;)

I really like this Gobi. Thirties looks with a custom touch. What a refreshing change from the thoughtless bobber fare we are usually seeing here.
Willkommen to the JJ.
Mike
I like very much

Welcome or as Von said Willkommen? is that right?
Thanks to both for patting my back, I need it...
Willkommen is the german word for welcome, thats right
ALOHA! ;)
Love it. Clever, brave and subtle chop with a ton of class. Welcome Gobi!
Nice job on the bike. Curious. What displacement is that motor?oh, and welcome to the board.
Is that lever in front of the kicker a high and low range selector ? If so can you change from high to low on the fly or do you have to be stopped?
Seems the JJ board is getting more and more "Krauty" ... welcome from the south-west of Germany

ha, ha, that would exacly what I need 8) Im fact it's just a addidional hand shifter, they did it often this way, when they started to use foot shifting - "in case of emergency"

The engine ist original, but inside evertything is changed
Welcome Gobi.Your bike shows class.
Good job Gobi , I've never heard of an EMW .I'm guessing the bike is a 350? -Coop
If you have more pictures of your build , I'm thinking you should leave this here and re-do a build thread on the main board, with more detail on your " home made " goodies inside that motor. I've been interested in that rear shock setup BMW ( I know this is an EMW) started out using and why the traditional swing arm setup became mainstream and th BMW setup didn't . Must be some advantage to a swing arm over this that I'm not seeing. This rear end setup seems like it would be very efficient. Am I missing something?
The swing arm was later!
The reason is history: the orignal BMW R35 was build in 1938, and was a harttail.
The motorcycle part of the BMW factory in end of the war was in the east part of germany, and the russians wanted to demount the factory as the usaly did. Wise people of the factory builded a handfull of cars an bikes from leftover parts, the russians have been impressed and comanded the production. Thousands of this BMW's where going to the Soviet Union.

A few years later, they also have been sold to germans, still under the Name BMW. In 1953 the bike was sold in a little bit moderner version, the EMW R35/3
In fact it was canged a lot in detail, but the engine still was more or less in the stage of the 30th and the look was to old fashioned for this time, so the bike was not verry popular

I think a regular swing arm makes meachanicaly more sense, in fact also BMW stopped the use of this principe in the end of the 50th

Hopefully I will report some more in fututre!
