79 Ironhead trans work in a 90 Sportster?

Does anyone on here know if the transmission gears in my 79 Ironhead will work in my 90 Evo Sportster if I swap the whole assy out?
Only two issues I can imagine would be the trap door bearing and the clutch basket splines or spacing.

Both are 4sp except for the 90 being close ratio. That's why I'm thinking it should work if I take the whole thing and swap it. I'm pretty sure a 80s trans would swap but not about the 79.

If it will work I'll be back on my main bike again for the first time since Oct.

(Shafts included) Not just talking about the gears here.
Going down to the garage now to take the 79 apart. I'll find out quick if it will work or not.
No it will not, the 90 has a Alt and the clutch basket is diferent so dif main saft, so forth...... Sorry man......

Bummer!

Thanks Roach.
I have made a request to Baker to make a five speed conversion kit for iron heads...I am only one voice. Everyone should call them and tell them that we will all buy one if it is available! How bout it.
Exept that it will cost $2500 and thats what you can get a whole bike for.....

About ten years ago...I asked that same question to them...

They feel that what they would need to get for one...That the sales would be to low to justify the start up cost..

I would rather have a close ratio 4 speed any day over any regular 4 speed or 5 speed. Just my 2 cents. If they could make a close ratio set (cheap enough) for us broke people who just ride the crap out of our stuff I think that would be a better idea than a 5 sp.

I guess after asking this question and reading some of the replies elsewhere that the cut off for me using the complete gear set in my 90 Sportster will be 1984. I'm still going to take it apart and see what the dif is. Splines, etc. I'll post up after I do my bench comparison.

Edit- I think they already do make a close ratio for most 4 sp. Better than peanut butter and chocolate.
Only reason to have more than 4 with close ratio gears in my opinion is to have an overdrive but that's another forum.
