Can you turn the lights off when starting it? Before I put a battery in mine it would run with the lights off, but would die when they were switched on. I'm running the Sparx rectifier too. I haven't put in my Wassell high output rotor/ stator yet, that might have solved the problem too but I just went with a tiny battery.

AIR, FUEL, SPARK....simple...you have got air...use starting fluid as a fuel(just to make sure) and spark. as stated above add a FULLY CHARGED battery..that will eliminate any problems with the "eliminator" or not enough voltage to fire....also recheck all grounds and solder any questionable connections.
Another member here had a somewhat similar problem....it was a temperamental switch..

concentrics or monoblock carbs? doesnt really matter,BUT, the last bike i had that would fire then die, needed the main jet cleared......seems the alcohol [in this pisspoor fuel we are being sold] tends to leave a film or crust blocking the main jet......bike would fire when tickled, then die! i just pulled the plug from the float bowl [concentrics] and sprayed some cleaner into the main and it fired right up and ran great all night! multiple shut-downs and restarts, no prob!
what i did was to use spray carb cleaner, spray some at normal can position, then bend the straw up into the center of the float bowl, have your buddy hold the throttle open and spray.........might not be it, but easy enough to try!
