I'm new to all this, never built a bike, so please excuse my ignorance. I have a 72 sportster frame, would a 1980 ironhead motor fit, or would the frame have to be modified? I know the shifter was changed over in 75. From what I have read it seems the motor and frames weren't changed much throughout the years. Thanks

Yes, it will fit. But it is not bolt in. First, the cross bar, on the bottom of the frame, that attaches the kickstand mount and footpeg mounts, has to be cut out. The 80 has a oil pan that fits between the lower rails, and it will hit the cross bar, keeping the motor from aligning with the motor mounts. The second thing, is the primary chain adjuster. The adjuster is under the primary, built into the cover. The bolt that adjust the chain, will have to be clearanced on the left side lower rail of the frame, or the primary chain adjuster will not be useable, and you will not get the primary cover off for work required in there. But it will fit.
